Apple Cool Storage-Good Idea / Bad Location • Assessment 25MAR13 • Apple farmers very much want cool storage. • Non-refrigerated root cellar type cool storages effectively store apples at least 8 weeks past end of fall harvest when prices triple to 45 AF/kg ($.40/lb) • This Farza CERP project has two serious flaws: • Site of installation has poor vehicle access. • Rainwater floods the storeroom 6 inches • We suggested drilling drainage holes in the downhill wall and stacking boxes on bricks and boards. • Taking Action • Plans to visit more installed cool storages to learn lessons. • Collecting cool and cold storage designs and opinions from NGOs and stakeholders for background information to discuss better apple storage solutions. • Preparing to assemble apple stakeholders to discuss how to promote relevant successful apple cool storages in apple districts of Kabul Province. 25- MAR-13
