Nature of light • A form of energy which enables us to see. • It travels at very high speed in vacuum. • It travels in straight line. • It is emitted by the luminous sources such as sun, stars, candles, lamps etc. • Light is a transverse wave and forms part of electromagnetic spectrum. • White light is a mixture of seven different colours namely red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet.
Light Ray • The path along which light energy travels is called a ray. • It is represented by a straight line with an arrow to show its direction of motion.
Reflection of light It is phenomenon of bouncing back of light after striking a smooth polished surface.
Incident Ray of light:-The ray of light which falls on objects is called as incident ray of light. • Reflected Ray of light:-The ray of which gets reflected from the surface of object is called as reflected ray of light. • Angle of incidence:-The angle between the incident ray and the normal at the point of incidence is called angle of incidence. • Angle of Reflection:-The angle between the reflected ray and normal is called angle of reflection.
Laws of Reflection There are two laws of reflection. These are:- • The angle of reflection is equal to angle of incidence. • The incident ray,the reflected ray and the normal at the point of incidence all lie in the same plane.
Real and virtual images • A real image is one which can be formed on a screen. • It is produced by ray that converge at the position of the image. • A virtual image is one which cannot be formed on screen. • It is produced by the reflection of light.
Formation of images on plane mirror • To the eye, all the reflected rays appear to have come from I, the image. • Thus the image formed is virtual.
Image formed by plane mirror • It is virtual • It is upright. • It is lateral inverted. • It has the same size as the object. • Distance of image from the mirror is equal to the distance of the object from the mirror.
Types of Reflection There are two types of reflection. These are • Regular Reflection • Irregular Reflection • Regular Reflection:-When a ray of light falls on a smooth reflecting surface i.e. mirror,it gets reflected along a particular direction, the image formed is clear and sharp. • Irregular Reflection:-When a light ray falls on irregular reflecting surface, they gets reflected in the different direction.
