  1. HIS – Smart Grid Karen Bartleson, President, IEEE Standards Association

  2. Highlight of Current Activities • Providing leadership in the development & deployment of smart grid technologies • Acting as a catalyst for change & innovation across the smart grid ecosystem • Our activities support the full life cycle of standards--from concept or incubation to market acceptance & use • We are developing a pipeline of standards related activities • Smart grid technology research & education • Market implementation programs

  3. Highlight of Current Activities • Smart grid equipment standards are needed to handle information data management, communications & control • Need for a flexible smart grid system – interoperability, design & operational standards will allow near-term and long-term smart grid evolution • Development of a body of interoperability smart grid standards is essential for the smart grid to operate • IEEE is collaborating with global stakeholders to develop smart grid standards that will extend across the entire grid

  4. Strategic Direction • Engaging participants from around the world in pre-standardization discussions, standards development & market acceptance activities • Leveraging IEEE's global community of experts from the Power Engineering, Communications & Information Technology sectors • Collaborating with national & international organizations (IEC, SAE) • Developing & sharing research for smart grid in conferences & other venues around the world • Providing a venue where the best minds come together to innovate & work together to advance smart grid technology for the benefit of humanity

  5. Challenges • The cost of transitioning to "smarter" grids from existing grids, i.e. equipment and operational costs • Differences in existing grid architectures around the world • Important to ensure an open, collaborative environment where all experts can participate

  6. Next Steps / Actions • Facilitate development of standards & bringing them to market • Continue education on smart grid technologies & standards • Engage in collaboration opportunities • Ensure open innovation to support multi-faceted & integrated solutions to address modern energy delivery that is reliable, environmentally friendly, economically viable & secure
