  1. Continuous Scottish House Condition Survey • BESAC • 23 June 2004

  2. What is the CSHCS? • Fieldwork carried out throughout the year instead of once every 5/6 years • Same amount of data collected: • Paired case targets • 3,000 per year • 9,000 by Q3 2006 • 15,000 by Q3 2008

  3. The survey is designed to… Monitor the physical condition of the housing stock at a national level over time Provide a benchmark for local surveys Supplement the system of resource allocation Be an information resource for research and policy development in housing and regeneration

  4. Why did we go continuous? • Increased flexibility • of content • of reporting • in managing problems • Remove ‘seasonal effects’ • More efficient use of resources

  5. Management of the survey • Strategic guidance delivered by a broad partnership of key stakeholders • Close partnership with DD • ONS and MMBL expertise • Consultation

  6. Reporting • Get the facts and figures into the public domain as early as possible without compromising validity or reliability • Primary purpose is to report nationally • but LAs need information too • Sample structured to report key variables at LA level

  7. Reporting • Approach is about adding value Policy support • Fuel poverty • SHQS Further research • Housing and Health Report

  8. Reporting • Currently developing options: • Continuous reporting as sample size permits. • Set reporting milestones with additional thematic reports.
