  1. What is Technology?

  2. Technology • Applied Science • A way of changing the natural world (using science) to solve problems and meet needs. • “Necessity is the mother of invention!” • Engineers apply science to solve problems • Does technology affect science? • Yes! Technology helps scientist learn farther, faster, solve problems easier (Light-bulbs, Cars, Computers, WEB, telescopes, space travel, etc…..) • Read pages 23-25 (What is the design process?)

  3. Technology Design Process • Identify a need • Research the problem (gather information) • Design a solution (brainstorm ideas & identify constraints) • Build and test prototype • Troubleshoot and re-design (identify causes of problems and fix) • Communicate the solution (Present, advertise) • Example: http://www.phschool.com/webcodes10/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.gotoWebCode&wcprefix=cgp&wcsuffix=6032

  4. Technology Design Process Challenge: Who can design an aluminum foil boat that can hold the most pennies? (The winning team gets a prize!) • Constraints: • 6”x6” Aluminum foil • One re-design • Must float for 60 seconds • Remember to brainstorm ideas before starting!! • Draw prototype designs in your journals (both initial and redesign)

  5. Review • What are the stages of the design process? • What is a constraint? • What is a prototype? • What is brainstorming? • What is a trade-off • How has technology affected society? • What scientific principle are you using to float the most pennies?
