  1. Contrasts & Contradictions The character acts in a way that is contradictory or unexpected. Text Clue: Author shows feelings or actions the reader hasn’t seen before or doesn’t expect. Ask yourself: Why would the character act this way?

  2. Aha Moment The character realizes or starts to realize something that changes his or her actions or thinking. Text Clue: Characters say “I realized…” or “I suddenly knew…” or “Now I know why…” Ask yourself: How might this change things?

  3. Tough Questions The character asks a tough question that reveals his or her concerns. Text Clue: Character asks self or other person a difficult question. (Shows inner conflict.) Ask yourself: What does this make me wonder about? What does it tell me about the character?

  4. Words of the Wiser An older character (mentor, advisor, parent) gives advice or insight to the main character. Text Clue: A wiser, often older, character offers a life lesson, usually in a quiet moment. Ask yourself: What is the life lesson and how might this affect the character?

  5. Again and Again The author keeps bringing up the same image, phrase or reference. Text Clue: A repeated image, phrase or reference. Ask yourself: Why does this keep showing up?

  6. Memory Moment The author interrupts the flow of the story to flash back to something that happened earlier. Text Clue: Phrases such as “I remember…” or “Thinking back…” Ask yourself: Why might this memory be important?
