  2. High Energy Stereoscopic System • Array of 4 Imaging Cherenkov Telescopes • In Namibia, 1800 m a.s.l. • Good optical site - dry, high and clear • Location perfect for central part of our galaxy • System completed December 2003

  3. g-ray astronomy • The sky in high energy gamma-rays: EGRET AGN SNR Pulsars Unidentified sources Diffuse emission from CR interactions

  4. Handful of known galactic sources from pointed observations • HEGRA survey (nothern sky) in VHE Gamma-rays • Found no sources • Average sensitivity: 15-30% Crab VHE g-ray astronomy • The sky in very high energy gamma-rays: IACTs AGN SNR Pulsars Unidentified sources (Diffuse emission from CR interactions)

  5. RXJ 1713 GC Technical details • Conducted between May and July 2004 • Galactic Longitude -30° to +30°, Latitude -1°, 0°, 1° • 504 runs, 230 hours of data • Reached average flux sensitivity below 3% of Crab • Known VHE Gamma-ray sources in the Region: • Galactic Centre and G0.9+0.1 • SNR RXJ1713.7-3946 Galactic survey region

  6. Need multiwavelength data to understand these new sources Counterparts • Three plausible associations with pulsar wind nebulae, two with SNRs • Only two of the new sources are vaguely close to EGRET sources (different populations?) • At least two of the sources have no known counterpart in any other waveband

  7. Summary • First sensitive scan of inner part of Galactic plane • 8 new sources, more to come • Will extend the survey this year • First results in upcoming Science paper
