  1. Conclusion

  2. Objectives • Incorporate source materials in a variety of ways (directly quoting, paraphrasing), demonstrating an understanding of the ethics of writing • Use appropriate rhetorical appeals, such as considering audience knowledge of the text, establishing his/her understanding of the text, establishing the soundness of the interpretation, and establishing a credible voice • Use effective organizational patters to guide the intended audience through a persuasive interpretation of the text • Select a variety of sentences structures; vary sentence length, type and complexity to create desired effect • Strategically focus paragraphs by using a variety of techniques; use transitional words and phrases to signal progression of ideas within and between paragraphs; use appropriate words and phrases to signal organizational patterns

  3. THE CONCLUSION • In a standard literary essay, the conclusion is usually the least perplexing paragraph to write. The conclusion simply wraps up the discussion conducted in the essay and re-establishes the original thesis, reminding the audience of the whole purpose of the paper.

  4. RESTATING THE THESIS There are a few things to remember when writing conclusions. • Don’t restate the thesis in the same way that it was stated in the introduction. The information should be the same, but phrase the ideas differently so it doesn’t sound like you are repeating yourself.

  5. EVERYONE LIKES CLOSURE • Don’t cut your paper short, ending it with a one or two sentence conclusion. Conclusions make some writers uncomfortable because they don’t like the idea of saying something they already said. Avoid the temptation to end your paper abruptly by shortchanging your conclusion.

  6. THE LONG GOODBYE • On the other hand, don’t revisit your entire argument in the conclusion. You don’t need to restate all your topic sentences or remind the audience of any details you’ve already covered. This is overkill.

  7. NO NEW TOPICS • Don’t introduce some entirely new idea in the conclusion. It is great to synthesize your ideas and maybe make an additional observation that is closely related to your thesis, but suddenly throwing an entirely new opinion into the paper complicates the issues and confuses the reader. And since it is the conclusion, you won’t be around to explain what you mean.

  8. IN CONCLUSION… • You may have been taught to begin your conclusion with “In conclusion…” You probably know by now that this is a pretty boring way to start the conclusion. Use a higher level transition.
