  2. Water pollution in Ciociaria • Sacco and Liri quality analysis • The “green Liri” compared to the Sacco

  3. Water in the Liri valley Liri and Sacco “ yesterday and now”

  4. Ciociaria • Ciociaria is a large region in the south part of Lazio, about 3.400 kmq, corresponding to the province of Frosinone.   • It was inhabited by old populations, ausoniche, erniche, volsche e sannite, and also includes neighbouring places like the ones along Casilina road, the old Latin road, the area of Appennini, Aurunci, Lepini, Ernici and Ausoni mountains, and others between the Liri and the Sacco as far as Gaeta gulf. • Ciociaria, especially in spring, is “green” because it is rich of waters. Huge woods cover large part of mountains and hills where flowers, trees and animals live peacefully, far from the noise of our “ civilization”.   • It is possible, walking along the paths near the small rivers or through the woods, to run into wilde places with caves, lakes and falls which remind us to the landscapes described in old tales

  5. Our region

  6. Ciociaria offers many amenities for people who love nature: we can remember Posta Fibreno natural park, Paliano forest, Cardito and Canterno lakes, Vallerotonda pinery, Terelle chestnut grove, Pastena and Collepardo caves, Liri falls in Isola del Liri. • Beautiful landscapes can be admired in the small villages, which keep uncontaminated customs and tradition of the ancient rural places, perched on mountain tops or at the bottom of hills or in the valleys where Amaseno, Aniene, Melfa, Rapido, Sacco and Liri rivers flow. • Once famous for its green waters, the Liri is the most important river of Ciociaria and the best-known river in central Italy. It springs from Cappadocia mountain in Abruzzo, and after a first twisting course, where its waters are clean and unpolluted, it receives, near Ceprano, the waters of the river Sacco, to join, close to Cassino Gari river. From this point, with the name Garigliano, goes on as far as Minturno where it meets the Tirreno see.

  7. The Green Liri

  8. Morphological information • At first the Liri flows in a deep gorge between the villages of Petrella and Cappadocia. The springs of the Liri gush from many different sources along the steep side of a calcareous rock and join, at the bottom, in a round basin.

  9. Liri yesterday • The spring receives water from veins which are in the calcareous cropping out gaps. The widespread hollownesses in the gaps allow an enormous absorption of the surface waters and a fast underground outflow of them towards the springs.

  10. The Liri today • Polluting phenomena not always correspond to the turbidity of the waters. In fact, although it has a high percentage of pollutants, its green colour is brighter than the colour of the Sacco; like you can observe in the following processed pictures.

  11. Photo digital processing • Light colours point out clean waters • Dark colours point out polluted waters Original picture

  14. Sacco yesterday • Sacco flows in Eastern Lazio, between Rome and Frosinone, it is about 80 Km long, it joins Liri - Garigliano and together run into Tirreno sea, bordering Lazio and Campania.

  15. Sacco today • Early in April the local autorities discover that the milk, produced by cows and sheeps in farms situated in the middle of Liri valley, contains a pesticide, forbidden by years because it is very dangerous for men. There were concentration 2000 times beyond the tresold allowed by the law(!!!). The towns directly involved in the pollution, with farms and companies closed, not delivered and distroyed milk, shooting of many head of cattle, are Colleferro, Segni, Gavignano, Paliano, Morolo, Sgurgola, Supino.

  16. The Sacco Scandal • Twentyfive cows died amid suffering after having drunk water from the small river Mola Santa Maria which flows into the sadly famous Sacco near Frosinone. “We are looking for the guilty water-wagon” is the caption of “The Messaggero”, a national newspaper. The detectives suppose that from a tank truck someone overturned in the river lethal industrial sewages.

  17. Concentration of pollutants

  18. Microbiological parameters

  19. Levels of undesired substances

  20. Waters should be a worldwide problem and not only of the single countries. • Stimulate the reutilization of refluent waters, appropiately treated, for watering. • Check the state of repair of waterworks to reduce water dipersion. • Dropping down the waste making people aware of the problem.
