  1. Adjectives and Adverbs Unit 8th Grade English Adjectives and Adverbs Unit

  2. HEY! • Have you thanked the English language for adjectives and adverbs lately?

  3. Why bother? • We learned in the previous semester that you can… • Make a sentence by only using a noun or a pronoun and a verb. • Heather talked! Peter rode his bike! Ashley slept! • So, why do we need to know any more? • We can communicate now, right?

  4. BORING!!! • Sentences that contain only nouns, pronouns and verbs can get really, REALLY boring. • Sure, they complete the sentence, but they also seem to be missing something….but what?

  5. How about… • Spice! • Life! • Color! • Fun! • Excitement! • Interest! • Emotion!

  6. Think about it… • How would you sell a car without any adjectives? Adverbs? • Mustang for sale. It runs. It is a color. It has lights and a system. Tires included. It needs work to make it. Owner sells.

  7. Wow… • That sounds like a GREAT car…

  8. But what if I said… • 1968 Vintage, cherry red Mustang convertible for quick sale. It has super track lights and a fully-loaded, state-of-the-artstereo system. Racing tires included. It needs little work to make it like new again. Sad owner must sell this classic car.

  9. Adjectives and Adverbs Make All the Difference!

  10. Adjectives and Adverbs… • Where verbs, nouns, and pronouns are the structure of the sentence, adjectives and adverbs give life to the sentence. • They make the sentence interesting to the reader. • Otherwise, you are left with nothing more than a boring, lifeless statement.

  11. Still not sure? • Let’s take a look at just how important adjectives and adverbs are…

  12. For example…Adjectives… • Heather talked. • Not very interesting. But then we need to considered what Heather looks like. • Heather is….

  13. Nerdy Heather talked about bugs. • Probably not what you pictured, right? • Adjectives are important because they help the reader clearly understand what you are talking about!

  14. Adjectives… • Add color, depth, and detail to what you are writing.

  15. Adverbs are important, too… • Adverbs add interest, too, because they add to verbs! • They tell you exactly how, where, when, or to what extent the action of the verb is being performed.

  16. Now, let’s try one with Adverbs! • Peter rode his bike. • How did Peter ride his bike? • Where? • When?

  17. Yesterday, Peter rode his bike foolishly. • Bet you didn’t see that one coming! • How could you; there were no adverbs!

  18. In this unit… • We will be studying the little words that add life and fun to nouns, pronouns, and verbs! • We are going to be studying adjectives and adverbs!

  19. By the end of this unit… • You will develop an understanding of the kinds of adjectives and adverbs. • You will use them correctly in a sentence. • You will learn some tricks to finding adjectives and adverbs in a sentence. • You will be able to spot and correct adjectives and adverbs when they are used incorrectly.

  20. By the end of this unit… • You will be an adjective and adverb guru!
