So really what does this mean? • Mental Illness is a behavioral pattern associated subjective distress or disability that occurs in an individual, and which is not a part of normal development or culture. • Types -Organic brain disorders -Mental and behavioral disorders -Schizophrenia -Mood disorders ( Mania-Depression-BAD) -Anxiety disorders -Somatoform disorders etc

What is depression? • The difference between depression and sadness/grief is in terms of content, duration and severity • Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity that adversely affects a person’s family, work or school life and general health. • Types -Mild -Moderate -Severe -Bipolar depression -Atypical depression -Seasonal affective disorder

  6. Why him and not her? • Biological -Genetic -developmental -organic causes • Psychological -early childhood experiences -significant life events -family and marital discord • Social -living conditions -economic distress -disasters: natural and human inflicted

  7. symptoms • Undue sadness • Reduced energy levels • Loss of interest • Reduced or excessive sleep • Reduced or excessive appetite • Forgetfulness/ inability to concentrate • Undue suspiciousness • Undue guilt feelings • Feelings of hopelessness/ helplessness • Suicidal ideations/ suicidal attempts • Hearing of strange voices

  8. Risk factors • Being a woman • Loss of mother • No confiding relationship • Substance abuse • Being unemployed • Having 3 children under the age of 10years • Untreated or poorly treated medical illnesses • Malignancies • HIV/AIDS illness • Major life events
