  2. Reagan - 1980 • Election • Reagan said Carter was weak • What were Carter’s faults???? • Slogan “Make America strong again.” • Promised to cut taxes, balance the budged and  defense spending

Reagan – Domestic Policy • New Right – Political conservatives • Moral Majority – Christian organization • Supported: school prayer, strong defense and free-market • Opposed: Abortion, ERA, gun control and racial balance in schools • Reaganomics • Supply-side economics: • Lowering top income tax rates = economic growth

  9. The Economy • Public had little confidence • National Debt was rising rapidly • Insider trading popular, but illegal • October 19th, 1987 Stock Market crashed (Stock losses of $1 trillion) • Savings and Loans crisis • Many loans gone bad

  10. Iran Contra Affair • U.S. was funding a war in Nicaragua • Sandinistas v. Contras • To gain more money they agreed to send 500 anti tank missiles to Iran for the release of more U.S. hostages • The profits were used to fund the Contras • OUTCOME: Huge White House scandal, resignations, Colonel Oliver North charged, Reagan was found not involved
