  1. Asserting yourself Situation: You asked a peer at Shell to email you a cost estimate related to your joint project. He said that he would send this document in a few days but didn’t do so. As a result, your boss is now annoyed with you. • Step 1: You’ve dealt with this colleague before. He’s not as diligent as he should be. And he’s defensive (tries to protect himself from criticism) about his performance. • Step 2: You need this document ASAP (as soon as possible). But you’ll be more likely to get it if you assert yourself without being nasty(mean). • Step 3: “As you may remember, last week, you said that you’d send me...” • Step 4: Your mental logic flow: Delay in ordering; possible effects of this delay; what you expect from him

  2. Asserting yourself Jianhua: Jack, it’s Jianhua in Drilling at CNPC. Jack: Hi, Jianhua. How you doing? Jianhua: Well, pretty well, except for one problem. Jack: Oh, what’s that? Jianhua: As you may remember, last week, you said that you’d send me the tubular cost estimate. Because I don’t yet have it, my boss can’t write his superior and get his approval to order this item. Jack: I guess I’ve been so busy I forgot. But I’ll send it out in the next day or two. It’s not that big a deal (that important) is it?

  3. Asserting yourself Jianhua: Actually, Jack, it is. Here’s why. If my boss doesn’t present this estimate to his boss by the end of this week and get his approval, we won’t be able to order this item by the end of this month. And without it, our project could be delayed. Jack: You may be right. Even so, a delay wouldn’t be that serious. Jianhua: Well, Jack, it could be. Let’s say that because we don’t have this part, this phase of our joint project is delayed by eight weeks. And based on our project’s cost structure, an eight week delay could cost our companies as much as $20 million. Jack: That’s still not that bad. After all, our companies both have extensive resources.

  4. Asserting yourself Jianhua: Well, that’s true. But, wasting money isn’t something that either of our companies tolerates. In fact, because of this delay and its related costs, we might receive poor performance reviews. Jack: OK, I get it (understand your point). I’ll send the cost estimate to you. Jianhua: I’d appreciate your doing so before the close of business today. If, for any reason, you’re not able to do so, please call me and let me know. I need to get this information to my boss immediately. Jack: I have it on my desk. I’ll email it to you right now. Jianhua: Thanks, Jack. I really appreciate that.
