The Man: Charles Manson • Born unnamed in Cincinnati, Ohio • Was named Charles three weeks late • Committed a string of robberies before age 13 • Jailed twice ; first time in 1956 • Begins his following called “The Family” in 1968 • Believed in “Helter Skelter” • Notion that a race war would happen between blacks and whites

The Location: Death Valley • Family moved into Spahn Ranch in 1968 • Manson and his Family lived in the ranch rent-free • Family member Lynette Fromme had sex with ranch owner George Spahn in exchange for the Family to live there free • Family members set out from the ranch on August 8th, 1969 to the Tate residence. • Manson and the Family hold up in another ranch, the Barker Ranch, in October 1969

The Crime: Killings • July 25th, 1969: Hinman Murder • Stabbed to death • August 9th: Tate Residence Murders • Four stabbed, one shot ;102 stab wounds inflicted • August 10th: Manson and family members drive around looking for more victims. Two more murders occur. • Two more stabbings ; wrote “Healter Skelter” and “Death to Pigs” at crime scene • September 1st: Gun used in the Tate Murders is found in a bush

  7. Arrest • Police raided Barker Ranch in October of 1969 looking for vandals
