Nathan Hale joined the army. George Washington asked one of his colonels if someone would volunteer to cross enemy lines and spy. Hale volunteered.

Hale was captured by the British and hanged on September 22, 1776.

The British executioner asked if he had any final words, and he told him, "I only regret I have but one life to lose for my country."
