  1. Ambassadors for Christ

  2. Jesus, The Great Ambassador • No message is greater than the one that brings salvation to a lost soul. • Who better to represent our God and His Gospel than the Son of God? Heb. 1:1-3

  3. Jesus’ Ambassadors • He specifically chose apostles (messengers; representatives) to initially represent and declare His ‘Good News’. Mk. 3:13-15 • In similar fashion, these men represent Christ as His ambassadors. 2 Cor. 5:20

  4. Ancient Ambassadors’ Role* • Their purpose was to renew or establish “goodwill,” “friendship,” and “alliances. • They were considered to be inviolate and were never to be imprisoned. • Contrast that with Paul (and other apostles). Cf. Eph. 6:20; 2 Co. 5:20; 6:4-10 • Conquered cities and provinces usually sent their ambassadors to Rome to plead their cases before the emperor or to offer tribute to gain some imperial favor. • From this boast, we can see a notable contrast between God and the emperor Augustus. • An all-powerful God does not wait for humanity to make their appeals to him but sends out ambassadors to make appeals to humanity. • Those selected to go on embassies were drawn from the ranks of the distinguished families in their homeland. For some, the opportunity to go as an envoy had the honor of community recognition attached to it, and many received commendations. For others, going on an embassy was considered to be one of the burdens of being part of the ruling elite. *The New American Commentary (Vol. 29, p. 295).

  5. Today’s Ambassadors for Christ • Continuing the work of Christ’s original ambassadors. cp. 2 Tim. 2:2 • In this way we continue our Savior’s “Great Commission” with His Gospel Message. Matt. 28:18-20

  6. Not Just For Older Christians • 10 year-old Samantha Smith – Goodwill Ambassador to U.S.S.R. (Yuri Andropov) • Timothy… and You. 1 Tim. 4:12 Samantha Smith, 1982

  7. Our Work for Christ • Reconciling the lost (or, those in jeopardy of being lost). 2 Cor. 5:16-21 • Representing what Christ stands for: grace and truth. Jn. 1:17 • Voluntarily seek God’s enemies with the Good News of reconciliation and peace – knowing we’ll also be hated. Eph. 6:19-20; Jn. 15:18-19; 17:14
