Pro’s and Cons: Attending a Public Community College Pro’s • Low Income Students = Board of Governors Fee Waiver *Pays your tuition regardless of units • Qualify for the Federal Pell Grant ($5,350, maximum) • Low Income Students = Free Education, No Borrowed Money Con’s • Classes get full, Registration Deadlines Matter • Attend multiple community colleges • First come, First Serve • State Cuts

Pro’s and Cons: Attending schools you see on TV Pro’s • Financial Aid is Offered • Same or Similar Degrees offered at Public Colleges • Programs can be completed in a few months or in less than two years Con’s • Programs have high costs and often hard to get up front • Heavily rely on loans to earn Community College Degrees • Job placement is never guaranteed (read contracts)

Transferring Tips • Science and Math Majors do not usually follow IGETC • Getting a Certificate does not mean you have done IGETC • Getting an AA does not mean you finished IGETC • Meet a Community College Counselor (EOPS or Counseling) • Visit the Transfer Center • Talk to each Private School (each has own list) • Attend summer programs (Counseling or Transfer Center) • Use www.assist.org

Things to know! • Transferring does not happen in 2 years (4-5 years) • Financial Aid does pay to attend a community college • Changing Majors often is not a good thing • Placement exam results are huge factors • Time Management and Deadlines are critical • Family responsibilities must be managed • Working over 20 hours is not recommended • Party yourself out of an education, part yourself out of • a good job and benefits!

Community College The California Community Colleges primary mission is to provide academic and vocational instruction for older and younger students through the first two years of undergraduate education (lower division). Community Colleges are authorized to provide remedial instruction, English as a Second Language courses, adult noncredit instruction, community service courses, and workforce training services. California Community Colleges admit any student capable of benefiting from instruction.
