  2. Surrealism: • Stemmed from the Dada movement (1916), which protested the madness of war (immediately after WWI). Dadaists felt that they could no longer trust reason. Their alternative was to overthrow all authority and cultivate absurdity. • Work was often shocking – for example: Poets reading nonsense verse while yapping like dogs

  3. Salvador Dali: • Spanish artist born in 1904. • Paintings have a dreamlike quality • The psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud influenced surrealists • Freud wrote: “The Interpretation of Dreams” • The subconscious or unconscious (dream state) are as important as reality. • Exposed his own eccentricities through his work • He said “If you play at genius, you become one”

  4. “The Persistence of Memory” • Dali’s most famous painting • 1931, 24.1 x 33 cm, oil on canvas • This painting incorporates dreamlike images within a realistic setting. • Influenced by dreams and a piece of soft cheese that had melted from the heat.

  9. SurrealistPortfolio: • The project will incorporate dreamlike images and lettering. • You may borrow ideas from Salvador Dali or use your own unique ideas to create a surrealist image.

  10. Art Synectics: Greek word: means to bring together • Distortion:Deforming or altering the image to exaggerate a certain feeling. Melt, transform the height or width of the letters. • Metamorphosis: Show the transformation of one objectintoanother. Show letterschanginginto an animal, person, or thing. Juxtaposition – placingelements close together to create a comparaison or contrast

General Guidelines: • Use your first and last name. • 75% of the folder must be covered • Use creative design and lettering • The back of the folder will have a quote or saying about Surrealism, or the artists from that period. • Use emphasis to create visual interest • Sketches and rough work required before beginning portfolio • Use pencil crayons to add colour to the work • Must demonstrate either distortion or metamorphosis
