Activities • Start Monday, September 8th • Be changed and ready to move • How to find out what you are taking? • My StFX; MesAmis; log in; My classes – listed on the bottom • Uniform – blue shorts, white t-shirt • NEW $35 for one set or 2 sets for $60 • Mike Cavanagh – 8 – 11 a.m. in the equipment room in the OC • Locker rentals + towel service • ½ locker 4 mo = $18; 8 mo = $24 (+ tax) • Full locker 4 mo = $35; 8 mo = $40 (+ tax) • Towel service 4 mo = $30; 8 mo = 45.60 (+ tax)

  5. Skill, location, time block ALL activities with: .10, .11, .12, etc are in the ‘fall’ skill block .20, .21, .22, etc are in the ‘winter’ skill block .30, .31, .32, etc are in the ‘spring’ skill block Fall = Sept 8 – Oct 31 Winter = Nov 3 – Jan 30 Spring = Feb 2 – April 3

A 207 Oland Centre … on the way to your HKIN 115 lab location • Mondays 1:15 – 4:15 p.m. • Tuesdays 9:30 – 12:00 a.m. • Wednesdays 9:30 – 11:00 p.m. • Fridays 8:30 – 11:00 a.m. • Any time my door is open!! FYI - Office hours AND my class, Fit 4 Life, and Fit 4 Tots times are posted on my door

Objectives: Students will be able to … • describe the Human Kinetics program and the diverse field of kinesiology • compare and contrast physical activity, physical fitness, exercise, and training • explain the relationships among physical activity, physical fitness, and health • identify the nutritional requirements of physically active individuals • explain the influence of physical activity on the prevention and treatment/reduction of stress, heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes • clarify how to attain, maintain, and measure the health-related components of physical fitness • identify the risks of overtraining, how to identify, prevent and treat it • define overweight and obesity and describe the role of physical activity, dietary intake, and the environment in their development, prevention, and treatment • describe a healthy lifestyle and the behaviour change process

  10. Evaluation • 20% Midterm Exam • 20% Lab Component • 10% labs • 10% final lab exam (in class – Dec 1) • 20% Physical Activity or Physical Fitness? • 10% Engaging in community-based physical activity promotion • 30% Final Exam

  11. Daily Experts • Each class several students will be identified as “daily experts”. These individuals will be given the first opportunity to respond to questions posed to the class. This opportunity is meant as a chance to actively participate in class not as a tool for embarrassment. • Should this opportunity to speak in class NOT appeal to you, let me know (via email) and I will remove your name from my list.

  12. HKIN 115 Labs • Aldona MacNeil – amacneil@stfx.ca • Start the week of Sept 15 • Attendance is mandatory • Labs will be posted on Moodle – download, review, complete Pre-Laboratory questions BEFORE attending • Labs are handed in at the end of each lab

  13. Detailed Syllabus ASSIGNED READINGS: You are strongly encouraged to read … a little every day! Daily schedule is provided

  14. What to expect • Overview • Lecture c/w notesand movement! • Class activity, group activity, individual activity, daily experts, class discussions, groups discussions, pop quizzes, review questions, etc. • emphasis on “learning the HK ropes”

  15. Expectations for me • Open, respectful, and comfortable classroom environment • Use a variety of teaching methods • Use a variety of and current materials/examples • To develop a broad and valued view of the field of Human Kinetics • To be ready for questions before, during, and after class • To be open and receptive to “advising” during, before, and after office hours • To return your assignments and exams in a reasonable amount of time (within 2 weeks) • To respond to emails within 24 hours

Expectations for Students • To download posted notes from Moodle • To read (attempt to) what has been assigned • To participate in ALL class activities • Turn your cell phones off during class and lab • Use your laptops, Ipads, etc. appropriately in class • To speak/act/send emails in a respectful manner • to your classmates and to me • To attend class and labs on time • To complete labs and assignments to the best of your ability and on time • To check your StFX email account … I will send messages!

What to expect … • Lots of introductions (like this one) … then a quick move into course work • Excitement/Anxiety • classes • assignments, labs, midterms • new people  • freedom  • 10-15 lbs! (4-6 kg) • a decrease in vigorous physical activity  • ? a decrease in overall physical activity 

Freshman 15 in Males • From summer prior to the end of first year average weight gain ~ 3.0 kg • Not related to dietary intake • Reduced physical activity • Increased computer and study time • Alcohol consumption (total and binge drinking) increased from summer to winter … but not again till the end of school year “Effect of the transition from high school to university on anthropometric and lifestyle variables in males” Pullman et al., APNM 2009, 34: 162-172

  19. I challenge you to NOT gain 10-15 pounds! Eat (and drink) well! Be active!

Other details … • How long to wait for your professor … 15 minutes • Check the StFX website for messages (re: school cancellation) • Check your StFX email account regularly for school messages and messages from your professors • HK classes – check also the main lobby of the OC • What if you have to miss class … an exam? • See the Dean of Science (BAHK and BScHK); proof for your absence may be required
