In this engaging art project, students will create an 18x24 inch stained-glass-like masterpiece using charcoal and water-soluble oil pastels, focusing on the beauty of overlapping fish. As they learn about the vital role fish play in our ecosystems—as indicators of environmental health, sources of income and food, and beings capable of experiencing fear and pain—they will also practice problem-solving through line, flow, unity, and balance in their creations. The project emphasizes the use of analogous color schemes while fostering discipline and craft in art-making.

Overlapping Fish Each student will create an 18 x 24 inch stained-glass- like painting/drawing with charcoal and water-soluble oil pastels with an analogous or complementary color scheme.
Why are fish important? Please come up with at least two examples for each of the points below. • They are environmental indicators. How? • They can experience fear and pain. When? • They are beautiful or at the least interesting. Who? • They are a source of income and food for some people. Why?
Directions… • Trace the fish stencil with pencil often enough that the overlapping lines remind you of a stained glass piece or a puzzle. • Do not leave shapes that are too big, and do not overlap too often so that the piece becomes a SPAGHETTI MESS. • Try to have the fish flow/swim in different directions. • The idea is to make an abstract puzzle that makes it a little difficult to see the fish.
Directions continued… • After tracing the stencil, go over the lines with smooth and ¼ inch lines of charcoal. • Cleanly rub the charcoal into the paper and erase the shapes out so that they are white. • Choose an analogous color scheme.
Analogous Colors • Analogous colors are 3 or more colors that are closely related and side by side on the color wheel.
Analogous Colors • Red + Orange + Yellow • Blue + Green + Yellow • Red + Violet + Blue • Analogous colors are also the colors in between the related colors: red + red/orange + orange + yellow/orange + yellow.
Directions Continued… • Using water-soluble oil pastels, color in the puzzle shapes without allowing neighboring shapes to share the same color. • It is not necessary to color in the shapes thoroughly. • Using a wet paint brush, dissolve the color, and paint in the shapes. • Be sure to rinse out your brush before dipping into a different color.
Learning Objectives: • Learn about fish and how they are important. • Overlap and be able to make good, problem-solving judgments about line, flow, unity, and balance. • Learn about analogous color schemes and mixing for intermediary colors. • Learn about demonstrating discipline and good craft,- the care, concern, and attention to detail of an artwork.
