  1. Entry Three You’ve seen how water likes to get together and makes puddles. Well the reason why water can “stick” to each other like that is because of hydrogen bonding. The bonds that are forms between the water molecules are weak and easy to break. Just throw a pebble into a pond and you’ll see what I mean. However, the bigger the area of water, the more hydrogen bonds, the stronger the bonds. So an ocean’s hydrogen bonds would be a lot harder to “disrupt” or “break” then a small puddle.

  2. Entry four If you closely at the straw in a glass of water, you can see that the water level is higher in the straw then it is in the glass. That’s capillary action you’re witnessing, water’s tendency to rise in narrow tubes. Water also has a tendency to go down small openings. That’s how plants are watered. Water goes down through the soil through small little openings to reach the roots.

  3. Entry Five Have you ever skipped rocks at the beach and wondered how the rocks you threw “bounced” on the surface of the water? Well bonds formed by cohesion create “surface tension.” This allows things such as rocks to skip over the water as the rock does not have enough energy to break the surface tension of the water. When you surface from the ocean after a scuba dive, you can see beads of water covering you. The reason why water has that bead-like shape is also due to surface tension.
