WSG Ch 5 - Typography Typography: the balance and interplay of letterforms on the page ... that helps the reader understand the form and substance of the page content Structural logic: <H2> is less important than <H1> versus Visual logic: <H2> is less visible than <H1> • A bit of a dig at particle physicists who designed HTML to share research and cared about the former • Plug for CSS as a way of separating structural logic (content) from visual logic (style) • Problems of browser variability

Elements of Good Typography • Legibility • Alignment (we have just learned <center> but often it makes a page less legible) • Line length (fixed or free? who knows) • White space • Type size • Emphasis • Consistency -- abetted by CSS • Cross platform -- sometimes a nightmare • Accessibility -- issues are size and color • Type graphics – antialiasing to smooth edges of a letter
