LSTA • LSTA – 2014 allotment is $4.1 million • $2 million for statewide projects • Cardinal, planning & assessment, continuing education, NC Pedia, resource sharing, Digital Heritage Center, Events • $2.3 million for competitive grants to libraries • Literacy & lifelong learning, digitization, planning, outreach • 2015 – IMLS legislation up for reauthorization • Reauthorization will be a priority for advocacy efforts in 2015

  3. LSTA • 60 Grant Applications Received • 17 Innovation grants! • Amount Requested / Available • $2,222,857 requested • $2,003,455 available • Review process has begun • Grants announced June 3, 2014

Government and Heritage Library • NCpedia (online NC encyclopedia) • UNC Press Publications Included: • Content from The North Carolina Gazetteeris now available (dictionary of North Carolina's geographical place names documenting their location, history and origins.) • Encyclopedia of North Carolina • Dictionary of North Carolina Biography (by the end of 2014). • The North Carolina Portrait Index, 1700-1860 (scheduled 2015). • http://www.ncpedia.org

  7. Government and Heritage Library • Roots MOOC (Genealogy MOOC – 2015) • The Government & Heritage Library and the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University are developing a North Carolina Genealogy Research “massive open online course” that will be available for the public in Spring 2015. The course has the capacity to accommodate up to 5,000 participants online!!!

Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped • North Carolina Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NCLBPH) is a special public library that circulates books and magazines especially made for persons who cannot use regular printed material because of a visual or physical disability. • The library (located in Raleigh)mails materials throughout the state. • Please help us get the word out! • http://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/lbph/index.html

Continuing Education • NC LIVE Business – taught by BLINC librarians Mary Scanlon & Dan Maynard; • This is a great way for CC staff to enhance the level of service they provide to the Small Business Centers on their campuses!  This is a full-day technology workshop, the registration fee has been waived, and a box lunch is provided. • April 24th – Kings Mountain • April 25th – Haywood County CC in Clyde • Also, seats are still available for the workshop in Smithfield at Johnston CC on Wednesday, April 16th.  • Registration has officially closed for Smithfield, but contact Kelly Brannock at the State Library if you are interested in attending the workshop in Smithfield on Wednesday.

  11. Continuing Education • NC LIVE Health – taught by UNC Health Sciences Library Outreach Librarian Brenda Linares • May 6th – Brevard • May 29th – Kinston • This is also a free full-day technology workshop which includes a box lunch.

  12. Continuing Education • NC LIVE Advanced – taught by Master Trainer, Martha Sink • May 7th – Asheboro • May 12th – Asheville • Free half-day workshop on advanced search techniques; how to use EBSCO’s alerts, folders, & search history; how to locate usage data.

Data • NC Public Library Data Dashboards are • http://plstats.nclive.org/ • a tool built for public libraries by the State Library • contains data sources of use to ANY library • Health – Uninsured persons, County health rankings • NC County budget and tax information • Children – in poverty, reading & math scores • Homelessness data • LINC - over 900 data items for each county in the state.

NC LIVE Home Grown eBook Project • Pilot project July 2014- December 2014  • Collection of eBooks from 10-15 NC publishers (to include Algonquin, Cross Roads Press, Press53, Lookout Press, UNC Press, etc.) • Beginning collection of about 1,000 titles • Fiction and nonfiction • Unlimited checkouts of titles • Libraries will be asked to pledge $250 for the pilot • More information soon!
