  1. FirstNet Access Features Depending on the workstation, FirstNet can be accessed in the following ways: Zero Client VMware View Client Citrix

  2. Using The Zero Client The Zero Client appears at some Nursing Stations and some patient rooms as a standalone monitor, mouse and a keyboard. There is no CPU with zero clients because they communicate with the server when you login, eliminating the need for a CPU. When powered up, the login screen appears and prompts you for your domain username and password (the domain should default as CHKD). If you are not set up with pass-through, you will be prompted to enter your UserName and Password.

  3. Disconnecting from the Zero Client When you have finished using the zero client in the patient’s room or the nurse’s station but wish to login to the same application somewhere else, leave the application open and click Disconnect. When you have finished working with an application completely, close it and select Log Off from the Start menu. There is a Power button that appears on the back of the zero client (to the right of the power cable if you are facing it). At least once a week, all zero clients should be power cycled.

  4. Accessing FirstNet via VMware The option for VMware View appears on selected desktops and is a method of accessing applications without going through Citrix. The benefit of using VMware View is that it uses the same technology as Zero Clients. Therefore, if you are logged into a Zero Client in a patient’s room and disconnect, you can access the same record from VMware View in your office by clicking on the VMware View icon. To access VMware View , double click the VMware View icon on the desktop. When prompted, click connect. If the login as current user box is not selected, the username and password box will appear. Enter your domain credentials, and press connect. Select the correct environment and press connect. The VMware View screen will appear. Note: If you forget to Disconnect from the Zero Client and attempt to connect via VMware View, the system will automatically disconnect you from the zero client. Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not log in to Citrix and to VMware View or a Zero Client at the same time.

  5. Accessing Citrix At times you may also need to access FirstNet via Citrix through the Web Interface. You can access the Citrix Web Interface the following ways: On KDnet, under Popular Links, select Citrix Web Access. Type “eKiDs” into your web browser.

  6. Accessing FirstNet After you have logged into Citrix, all applications for which you have access will display. Select FirstNet and log in using your username and password.

  7. FirstNet’s Place in Cerner Millennium Within Cerner Millennium, there are modules that interface (communicate) with one another. FirstNet is a module of Cerner Millennium, designed specifically for Emergency Room usage. FirstNet contains functionality for Triage, Patient Tracking, Documentation and the Depart Process.

  8. FirstNet’s Place in Cerner Millennium As patient data is updated within any application, the patient’s Electronic Medical Record is immediately updated and the information is accessible from other applications.

  9. FirstNet Application Menus Within FirstNet menu functionality is consistent; click the menu and select the applicable option that you want. Similar to menus , FirstNet toolbars allow you to quickly access commands to perform functions within an application. If a function is grayed out and not active, it is either not used at CHKD or your security does not have access to that function. Depending on your position the available icons may differ.

  10. FirstNet Process Flow The FirstNet workflow process may vary depending on the situation. However, the basic workflow is as follows: Pre-arrival • By clicking on the telephone triage button users will have access to a pre-arrival form which can be used in cases where an EMS is transporting a patient to the ED or a physician calls an ED physician to inform them they are sending a patient in.

FirstNet Process Flow • Quick Registration and Quick Visit • When a patient arrives at triage, depending on whether or not the patient already exists in Eclipsys, either a Quick Book Registration and Quick Book Visit will be created or just a Quick Book Visit. • The information will then be interfaced to FirstNet so the patient will immediately appear on the tracking list. • The Quick Book Registration/Visit will later be converted to a Full Registration and Visit.

  12. FirstNet Process Flow • Power Forms • Once the Quick Registration/Visit is completed, an ED Primary Triage form will be available for completion. Patient acuity can be determined and assigned from this form and will display on the tracking list.

FirstNet Process Flow • Tracking Lists • The tracking list is the foundation for all clinical communication within the emergency department. • Multiple custom views support the clinical needs of individual users including but not limited to physician views, nursing views and registration views. • Online patient charts, patient locations, requested or completed events, provider availability, patient acuities and other real-time patient and provider data can be accessed in the tracking list window. • The tabs that appear on a tracking list depend on the user’s responsibilities.

  16. FirstNet Process Flow Tracking Board • The Tracking Board is view only and allows staff to view patient information. • Personal patient information such as last name and reason for visit can be omitted to comply with privacy policies. • The view will update automatically once every minute.

  17. Opening a Patient’s Chart There are several ways you can open a patient’s chart from FirstNet. • Click on the open folder button from the toolbar (if available). • Highlight the patient’s name on the tracking list and double click in the far left column with the forward facing triangle to open the patient’s chart in eKiDs PowerChart. • Right click on the patient’s name and select the option to open the chart.

  18. Opening a Patient’s Chart • If your patient is deceased, you will receive the following message upon selecting your patient. This message will only display once the Deceased field has been set to “Yes” in a patient’s record. • To continue to the patient’s record, select OK. You will be able to view this information in the Patient Information tab also.

  19. Quick Actions Window Double click on a patient’s name on the tracking list to open the Quick Actions Window where you can view additional patient information.
