5. During today’s class, we will distinguish between an obligation and a responsibility. We will also make our own countries based on the rights we find most important. Please take notes by filling in the blanks on your guided worksheet. I will pass the three-hole punch around during the guided notes so you can put this paper in your binder when it is done.

6. RIGHTS Definition: Things that you are allowed to do because of nature or because of law

7. Because of NATURE? Because of LAW? What are you talking about, man?

8. Ok, ok… Here we go… “Because of Nature” A long time ago a man named John Locke said that every human pursues three things: life (survival), liberty (freedom), and property (owning things to help us survive). Mr. Locke called these NATURAL RIGHTS.

9. Ok, ok… Here we go… “Because of Law” Just as all people have natural rights, there are also rights that are created by the laws. For example, Congress can pass a law that gives people new rights! GOT IT! THANKS!

We need participation to have democracy. Personal Rights allow people to live how they want as long as it doesn’t get in the way of other people’s rights.

22. Do I Have Rights? As a student, you have rights, but your rights are limited to protect you and your peers. For example, you can’t say whatever you want in a speech at a school event. Your school can require you to be respectful and appropriate. When you are an adult, you have more freedom to do and say what you want. Does this seem fair to you? Give a thumbs up or down! Why might it be important for students to have limited rights in school? Give ONE reason it might be important. Blaaaah blah blahhh blah…

23. What Do All These Rights Mean For Me? With rights, or freedoms, come… RESPONSIBILITY!!! There you go again! Explain yourself!

24. RESPONSIBILITIES Definition: The expectation that you will take care of certain things or perform duties Oh! Stuff we’re supposed to do!

25. Types of Responsibility Just like rights, there are different kinds of responsibilities. Social Responsibilities Things you should do! • Stay Informed • Tolerate Others • Protect Public Safety • Register to Vote • Speak Your Mind Personal Duties Things you have to do! • Jury Duty • Pay Taxes • Obey Laws • Register for Selective Service • Get an Education We must pay taxes and should register to vote!

26. I’m a student… Do I have responsibilities?? Yes! As a student, your list of responsibilities might look a little different. Your list may not include voting, but it probably includes respecting authority.

27. Do they ever overlap? YES! Is voting a right? Is voting also a responsibility?

28. Do they ever conflict? YES! What if you yelled “FIRE!” in a crowded movie theater? What RIGHT might be involved? What RESPONSIBILITY might be involved?

29. In the crowded movie theater scenario, which is more important: The right? Or the responsibility? The responsibility. Even though you have a right to free speech, you have the responsibility to protect the public safety. It would be seriously unsafe to yell “FIRE!” in a crowded movie theater…

42. 二 Can I Create A Country? Using the crayons and colored pencils from the “Coping with Stress” cabinet, create a flag for your country on the worksheet. Next, write a motto for your country. A motto is a short phrase that sums up your ideals and beliefs. For example, the motto of the USA is since 1956 is IN GOD WE TRUST. It is also the motto of the state of Florida and the country of Nicaragua. Texas’s motto is FRIENDSHIP. Wyoming’s motto is EQUAL RIGHTS.

Sort the rights from responsibilities and write them into the scrolls at the bottom of the page. When you get to the last line on the rights scroll, you need to make your own right up. When you get to the last line on the responsibilities scroll, you need to make up your own responsibility.

I will help you find all the other students who have the same selected right and same selected responsibility as you. You will become a member of a coalition and I will write your group name on the board.
