  2. The Research: 69 % of 8th graders are below the proficient level to comprehend the meaning of text at their grade level. High school students are not college & career ready. There is a lack of helping students learn the discipline-specific strategies needed for content-area work.

Vocabulary Instruction • Integrating explicit vocabulary instruction into the existing curriculum enhances students’ ability to acquire textbook vocabulary. • The probability that students will learn new words while reading is relatively low—about 15 percent. • In order for students to understand a passage, students have to know 95-96% of the words.
