  2. A Little About Me • This is my 1st year teaching at Butler but 7th year teaching. For the past six years, I taught 2nd and 3rd grades at Mill Creek. • I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education from James Madison University. • Some of my favorite hobbies are running, snowboarding, and traveling.

  4. Reading • LEAD 21 & Comprehension Connections • Third Grade Focus: Understanding what we read and developing written comprehension. Becoming more independent learners. • Fluency and Expression: Podcasting and Reader’s Theatre • LEAD 21: Online resources for home available

  5. Reading • Daily Five: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Writing • Differentiated Small Groups: Each child will meet with me at least two times per week. Strategic group meets daily. • Assessments: There will be weekly reading assessments. I will send these home in Wednesday folders.

  7. Math • Everyday Math • Math Games found on class website by unit • WIN (What I Need) time • MIC (Math Investigations Center) for enrichment • Problem Solving Fridays

  8. Writing • Being a Writer • We will write personal narratives, informative pieces based on research, persuasive letters, paragraphs, poetry and fictional stories. • On Demands: After we have published a writing piece together, students will complete an “On Demand.” This assessment will demonstrate their ability to organize their thoughts, write with detail, add style and edit their stories independently.

  9. Social Studies and • Social Studies: Geography, Economics, Immigration, Community, and Current Events • Science: Solar System, Life Cycles, and Motion • Study guides will be provided before assessments!

  10. Field Trips • Butterfly assembly in the Spring. • Possible Field Trip to the Franklin Institute or Planetarium.

  11. Homework Policy • I check Homework every day. If forgetting homework becomes a habit (4-5 times per month) it will be reflected on the Report Card. • Please contact me if your child is struggling with homework. • Homework consists of: • Reading Log (10-15 minutes per night) • Spelling • Math Homelink page • Enrichment “All Star Club”- Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science enrichments optional.

  12. Spelling Homework • Monday: Two Times Each • Tuesday: ABC order • Wednesday:Seven Super Sentences • Thursday: Three words in a story • This week we will learn the routines and practice together. • Homework can be completed on your own time schedule. • Spelling tests will be weekly.

Grading • I will send assessments home in Wednesday folders to be “signed and returned.” • Work Habits/Study Skills Assessed • Content Area Grading System: 90%-100%= A (Advanced) 80%-89%= B (Proficient) 70%-79%=C (Proficient) 60%-69%=D (Basic) 59% or below = F (Below Basic) • November Conferences and Spring Portfolio Conferences • Mid-Marking Interims sent home if below proficiency

  14. PSSA’s • Testing window will be from March 17th- 28th. • Please do not plan any vacations during this time.

  15. Rewards and Consequences • 5 color card system (Every day is a new start!) • PURPLE: Everyone’s goal • GREEN: Warning • YELLOW: 10 minutes of recess • RED: A phone call home • BLUE: A visit to the office • Students write their color in their homework books daily under “Teacher Message”. • A reflection card will be sent if they flip. If they flip to yellow a conduct report will be sent home.

  16. Rewards and Consequences CLASSROOM ECONOMY • Superstar bucks are an individual reward. • Prize Box. • Marbles are a class reward. Superstar Bucks

  17. Snacks Daily: Please send your child in daily with a healthy snack that is easy to clean up. Snack time is from 10:05-10:25. Birthday treats: Mr. Brereton has asked that we find a way to celebrate birthdays and honor our children without food. If you would like to read to the class on your child’s birthday, donate a book to the Butler library, bring in pencils/stickers, or anything else please send a note or an e-mail to coordinate.
