  2. Henrik Ibsen – March 20, 1828 – May 23, 1906 (78 years) • Childhood - family went from wealth to poverty • wanted to be a painter • wanted to be a doctor • 4. too poor and too unsociable to make friends

  3. 5. spent his time reading everything • Later as an adult, wrote for the Bergen National Theater in Norway • At the Bergen Theater he learned much practical stagecraft • Later moved to the Christiana (Oslo) Norwegian Theater • 9. He quit Norway in 1864 for 27 years because of his frustration

  4. Transitional Page 10. Went to Italy for 10 of those years to continue writing plays 11. From Italy he moved to Germany 12. Eventually received an honorary doctorate 13. Had a series of strokes that incapacitated him and he then moved back to Norway in 1892 14. Died May 23, 1906

  5. Transitional Page • About his plays: • He is called the father of modern drama • His works after leaving Norway were almost entirely self-inspired • Plays always deal with self-analysis and introspection, psychological and social problems • Lack of changing scenery, but with more realism

Transitional Page • Got rid of the poetry and wrote prose • Wrote controversial plays about the darker or less talked about issues of human nature • Focused on common human struggle on the personal level rather than grander issues of humankind • Nonetheless, the common spoke to society as a whole

About A Doll House: • Presented in 1879 • Praised by many in Europe, but condemned by his peers and conservatives in Norway • Theater in Norway demanded the ending to be changed • One room setting, very real; dressed exactly as the main room of the home should be • Language and actions were normal and natural Transitional Page
