  1. Community Internet A collaborative effort to provide high performance broadband internet service to a close community: Cikini3

  2. Issues with the currently available ISPs at Cikini 3 • At Cikini 3, the only available choices are Telkom Speedy and Bignet • Shared with so many users, link performance is inconsistent.

  3. The concept of community internet • Acquiring a relatively high cost broadband internet service from an ISP • Distributing it among the community members through a low cost community wireless network: Wireless Distribution System (WDS) • Sharing the initial investment cost (one time) and its operational cost (monthly) to all members

  4. The broadband internet service • The link is a 1 Mbps uplink and 2 Mbps downlink. • The link will be shared only by us, the community member. • The initial cost for installation and commissioning is one time. • The monthly cost is fix and will be shared by all participants equally. • The minimum contract with ISP is 1 (one) Year, but can be paid in monthly basis at the beginning of the month.

  5. Wireless Distribution System (WDS) • Distributing Wireless Access Points (APs) across the area • Maximum distance is 2 x 75 meters from one AP to another, the closer the better • All APs are positioned in LOS (Line of Sight)

  6. Requirements • Internet drop point: • Several network devices: routers, modems etc • Continuous electrical supply • Access Points / WDS node at member’s premises: 1x Linksys WRT-54GL: • It must be installed outdoor in shade, protected from rain and sun, line-of-sight with other WDS nodes (Access Points) • Installation material, e.g.: wall mounting bracket, conduit, cable, screws etc • You’re free to install additional unit to share the service with your family members

  7. Critical Factor • Internet drop point • Continuous electrical supply • WDS • Due to its limited coverage, participation of each community member is critical. A blank spot will hinder the next member to join the network • Continuous electrical supply and accessibility to the power outlet for emergency reset • Timely payment

  8. The benefits • The internet link is connected to the 1st tier / International Internet Exchange instead of the 2nd tier / Indonesian Internet Exchange, hence better performance. • 2 Mbps is quite significant big bandwidth, good performance and available 24 x 7 • Unlimited access with no quota and on a fix cost basis • The more participant the lower is the cost sharing • The WDS can also be utilized for other purposes, such as: CCTV, IP telephony etc • We are not limiting the number of computers at your home and / or usage. This is free for all of your family members, everyone is welcome

  9. The downside • At Cikini 3, the whole infrastructure will be managed by amateur, no dedicated staff will be assigned to maintain the quality of service

  10. Cost Estimation of initial cost (one time)

  11. Cost for the internet drop point • Initial investment to purchase the required devices: • Router • Modems • Cables • Etc • Cost is Rp 5 Mio, divided by 15 ~ Rp 335.000,-

  12. Cost for the WDS Nodes

  13. Initial cost sharing - Summary • Total cost per house, based on 15 members: • Internet: Rp 335.000,- • WDS (USD 86): Rp 903.000,- • Total: Rp 1.238.000,- • This amount is paid in to the provider up-front, one time and calculated based on 15 participants

  14. Cost Estimation of Monthly Cost

  15. Other cost sharing item • Contribution to member who provides space and electricity for the internet drop point: • Electricity: approx. 108 kwh per month ~ Rp 250.000,- • Maintenance cost to anticipate any hardware failure (not on your in-house devices).

  16. Monthly operation cost sharing - Summary • Internet Access: Rp 4.400.000,- • Contribution to place provider: Rp 250.000,- • Maintenance cost to anticipate any hardware failure (not on your in-house devices) Rp 100.000,- • Total: Rp 4.750.000,- • Divided by 15: Rp 317.000,-

  17. To Do

  18. Action Item • Agree on the concept and its pricing and determine the timeframe for the implementation. • Proof of concept: Dipa will perform some research to ensure that WDS is applicable in Cikini 3, need cooperation from participants. • Rectify the design if necessary • Followed by project scheduling. • Define process for the monthly payment. • Define rule for participants and new joiner. • Initiate installation.
