  1. Microsoft Word

  2. The home page is where most of the magic happens • There are 5 different task panes • Clipboard • Font • Paragraph • Styles • Editing

  3. Clipboard • Nearly the same as in paint • New option “format painter” • This function takes the formatting of text already on your document and applies it to other text in the document • It works by highlighting the text with the formatting you want and then highlighting the text you wish to change

  4. Font • I’m pretty sure we generally know what this stuff does, but we’ll go over it anyway • Determines font and font size • Increases or decreases font size • Clears formatting • Bold, Italic, and Underline • Strike through • Super- or Sub- script • Highlight • Font color • Change Case

  5. Quick Keys • Many of the quick keys for Word are used in other programs in Microsoft such as Excel and Paint • Crtl+A • Ctrl+C • Ctrl+X • Ctrl+V • Crtl+Z

  6. Quick Keys • Bold ctrl+B • Italicize crtl+I • Underline ctrl+U

  7. Practice 1 • Create a poem, song, rap, haiku, or some other literary construct that utilizes at least 5 different fonts and font effects to give the text a voice. Save in personal folder as MSW1 • Ex. – The spooky dude snuck up behind the poor, frightened, helpless, little, defenseless student annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndstruck!

  8. Paragraph • Bullets, numbers, and multilevel list • Decrease/increase indent • Alphabetize a list • Show/hide paragraphs • Text Alignment • Line spacing • Background fill color and borders

  9. Proper Formatting • Paragraphs should be indented • Use the”left” text alignment • Teachers typically want their documents double-spaced • Font-size 11 or 12 only for body text, perhaps up to 14 or 16 for a title • Do not do a bunch of silly things to make your reports look longer, the teacher will know!

  10. Styles • Styles are pre-chosen sets of fonts, font sizes heading types, etc • Not very useful…typically quicker to do the selections yourselves unless you are accustomed to the styles

  11. Practice 2 • Look up a favorite subject of yours that has multiple parts to it. 1-Paste the article.2-Summarize that subject in a paragraph and give it the Justified alignment.3- Underneath the paragraph make a list of all the subjects that have to do with it. This will be a bullet or numbered list. 4-Save in personal folder as MSW2. Example: Physics is the science of mother nature. It aims to uncover the laws of reality through the use of scientific observation and mathematical hypotheses. The field began with Isaac Newton in 17th century and has since been the force behind modern society and the technologies it possesses. Some different fields in physics include the following: • Classical Mechanics • Quantum Mechanics • Thermodynamics • Solid State Physics • Particle Physics • Astrophysics • Quantum Gravity

  12. Editing • Allows you to search for any words in your document • Will replace any word in your document with another one that you choose • Selects text or objects (ie. pictures) Quick Key! “Find” is ctrl+F Also works on the internet (very useful search mechanism)

  13. Practice 3 • Go back to the paragraph you wrote about in the last practice • Using the “Find” function, find a word that you use pretty often • Using the “Replace” function, replace that word with a silly word that does not fit in at all • Re-read your paragraph to see how it sounds

  14. The “Insert” page is used for inserting “objects” into your document • There is a lot you can do with this page, but we will focus on tables, illustrations, and symbols

  15. Tables • They put tables in your document! • Very useful for organizing data in science classes or comparing two texts in English classes

  16. Tables Cont’d • You can start off by choosing how many boxes you would like, or you can draw your own table, like the one shown above • If you prefer to use Excel, then you can also put a mini Excel document in your Word document

  17. Practice 4 • In your word document, create the a similar table and fill it in with your own data • Save this as MSW 4 in your private folder

  18. Illustrations • Inserts a picture saved on your computer • Inserts pictures pre-saved in Word • Inserts various shapes, like in Paint • Inserts various types of knowledge trees and tables and other ways to organize and present stuff • Inserts graphs and whatnot

  19. Illustrations cont. • Play around! • Find out what you can do with different shapes. • Rotations • Stretching • Twisting • Look through the different SmartArts – these can be VERY useful for your classes • Try inserting different charts

  20. Practice 5 • Make a collage about your definitions of success • Use pictures and overlapping shapes- at least 5 • Don’t forget SmartArts – use at least 3 • Put a title on you page and be ready to share with the class • This can be past or future success • Save work as MSW 5 in your private folder

  21. Symbols • Inputs different equations so that they look nice (as oppose to trying to type them in) • Has symbols from other languages

  22. Equations • When you first click on equations, a box will pop up in your document (shown to the left) • Your toolbar will change, showing the different stuff you can do with your equation

  23. Commonly Used Symbols • Angles, variables, square roots, times, approximately equal to, greater than and less than, percentages

  24. Structures • Allows you to input different types of symbols and equations, from fractions to integrals • You will mostly use FRACTIONS, SCRIPTS, and RADICALS

  25. Practice 6 • Insert the following equations into your word document. Show the teacher you are creating your own equations. Save as MSW 6 in your private folder

  26. Page layout is mostly useful for selecting your margins and the orientation of the page • This is also where you insert columns into your paper • Changing the size of your page is only necessary when you are printing onto a larger or smaller piece of paper

  27. Page Setup • Determines how thick your margins are • Portrait or Landscape (Hotdog /Hamburger) • The size of the paper you are printing on • Inserts columns

  28. Practice 7 • Make a list of your 10 favorite things in life • Make a list of your 10 least favorite things • Using the landscape orientation, create a page with two columns, one of them with your favorite things and the other with your least favorite things. Save as MSW 7 in your private folder • Try using the different augmentations of your font that you used earlier to give it a nice looking title and format

  29. Review Page • The review page is a great place • Look up the meaning of anything in your document • To check your spelling and grammar • To add comments to the paper • Translating

  30. Spelling and Grammar

  31. Research • This will instantly give you research on something that you highlight in your text • Can even go to the internet to find stuff out

  32. Comments • Just highlight the part of the text you wish to comment upon and then click the “Comment” button

  33. Practice 8 • Find a subject on Wikipedia (perhaps from your current Geography or Science chapter.) • Copy and paste the first paragraph of that article into Word • Using the “Research” tool, find out about a word you do not know • Using the “Comment” tool, write about what you learned about that word in the margin • Add a second “edit” comment of your own. • Save as MSW 8 in your private folder

  34. Right-Clicking • Typically a shortcut to options located in the toolbar at the top of the page • Synonyms is a very useful operation

  35. Right-Clicking Images • Allows you to wrap text around the image in multiple ways • Insert a caption • Change the size • Format Picture

  36. Format Picture

  37. Right-Clicking on Shapes • Grouping and Order

  38. Grouping • Groups the objects together so that they become one-in-the-same image • Click on image, hold shif, click on second image • Allows you to move and stretch all objects simultaneously

  39. Order • Chooses which shape will be on top

  40. Success Project • Create a visual presentation of your success so far this year. Include your grades for first and second quarter as well as your Midterms and DCAS. Use MS #5 as part of your final project. It should be at least 3 paragraphs long and must use the following: • At least 3 different shapes • At least 3 different fonts • At least 2 columns • At least 1 image from the internet • At least 1 table • At least 1 equation

  41. Success Project (Part 2) • Discuss the many ways you’ve been successful. (Academics is not the only measure) • If you are not happy with certain aspects discuss what changes you think may help. • Look back at the daily inspiration quotes –which ones can you apply to your life now?

  42. Grading • You will be graded as follows
