Curriculum • Language Arts • Science • Social Studies • Health • The above subject areas are integrated. • Math - Math Makes Sense • * Technology integrated throughout all subjects. • Leveled Books • Students will be reading and taking books home that are at their reading level. The level your child reads at will be determined through reading records. This assessment is completed on an ongoing basis. Purpose of Homework/Reading • ✎ reinforces core word vocabulary • ✎ stresses independence to complete a task and organize belongings • ✎ teaches fluency • ✎ demonstrates that reading is not just done at school • ✎ builds relationships/time spent with your child • ✎ promotes reading pleasure Scheduling Homework/Reading • ✎ set time aside for 15 minutes every evening • ✎ find a time that works well for you and your child Getting Prepared - Helpful tips ✎ Promote positive educational values Homework Schedule • There will be homework from Monday to Thursday each week. • The nightly homework will consist of the following: • a) Reading • b) Word Ring (Grade 1 Only!) • C) Spelling Words (Grade 2 only) • * Grade 2 students will receive a duotang with math strategies later on in the year. ✎ Please make sure that your child returns his/her book, word ring and homework bag everyday to school. ✎ Please sign the Homework Log every night and comment. Homework

  4. Lunches School Food Orders • Peanut Free School ( No nuts of any kind! ) • A Treat Day sign up sheet is being passed around. If you are interested in bringing in something, please sign. • Microwave – Students can reheat items from home. Please have proper containers. Microwave frozen meals will not be accepted due to time constraints. • Food orders are placed on Friday for the following week. • Orders need to be in to the office by 9:00 am. • All forms are now on line! • Food choices and forms can be found on our school website.

  5. Additional Information • ScholasticA grade 1 and grade 2 book club form will be sent home each month. This is optional! The first one will be in October. • Bus NotesIf your child is going to be traveling on a different bus or is going to be picked up after school, a note from home is required. If a note is not present, the child will be sent home on their normal bus run. • Kleenex We will have many sniffles throughout the year so if every child could supply the classroom with a box of tissue it would certainly be a great help. • Breakfast ProgramThe breakfast program is open each day from 8:15 – 8:25.

  6. Additional Information • Literacy SupportOur Literacy support teacher works with students in a small group setting. Supporting classroom teaching is the goal of literacy support. Ms. Montgomery is our literacy support teacher for grade 1 and Evelyn MacLeod is our literacy support teacher for grade 2. Students who need it most will receive it as determined by assessment. • Safe ArrivalIf your child is absent from school, please call the office at 569-0550 Ext. 300 and report your child’s absence. Two days missed per month = One month of school • Punctuality and AttendanceStudents are expected to arrive by 8:20 for an 8:30 start. When students arrive in the morning, they will remain outside in the front playground until the bell goes at 8:15. Students do NOT come into the school prior to this bell unless the weather is inclement.

  7. At our school the grade one classes visit the primary library once a week for a scheduled read aloud and book exchange. We have a collection of four thousand books that support the curriculum and theme units. As well, many popular and perennial favorites are available for pleasure reading. Library Information

Class Schedule • Specialists classes will be held everyday. • Students from grade 2 will travel to these classes with fellow grade 2 classmates. • If your child has music one day, your child will have Phys.ed the following day. • Students will have library one day in the six day cycle. • Students will have computer one day in the six day cycle. • Please note that specialist classes are 30 minutes in duration.

Curriculum Mapping • With a combined class, my focus will be on the provincial outcomes for grade 1 and grade 2. • Not all themes for grade 1 or grade 2 will be covered this year. • For Example: Language Arts - Grade 1 = Theme on Jan Brett - Grade 2 = Theme on Kevin Henkes My focus for language arts will be on units of study. The first unit of study we will complete will be on small moments and an illustration unit. In math, we will be focusing on number sense for the first few months. • Our school is participating in a progress pilot with 6 other schools. Our focus is to look at different ways of reporting and accessing student progress.

Classroom Blog • Our Weekly Homework and our daily classroom happenings can be followed on our class blog. • To easily access the blog for the first time log onto our school website at the following address: http://glenstewartprimary.wordpress.com • Click on staff and find my name which will automatically send you to our classroom blog. • By subscribing, you will automatically receive an email when the blog is updated with new information.
