  1. SC13-API CRA Testing Program Brine – CRA JIP June, 2013atWashington D.C Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal USA Inc. Prepared Max Tanida

  2. Summary of Work/Year •Funding Year 1 – Gathering Industry experience‐ literature and Field Failures •Funding Year 2 –Prelim Tests with O2 & SCN‐ •Funding Year 3 – Testing with CO2 Additions •Funding Year 4 – Testing with CO2 & H2S Additions

  3. API CRA Brine Guideline

  4. Summary and Update • Provides Guideline to allow users to review CRA performances as function of : • - Brine, - Temperature, - Additives, - Contaminants • API CRA Brine Project : • - has published the paper of the “Effect of Thiocyanate on Stress Corrosion Cracking of Corrosion Resistant Alloys in Halide Brine” to NACE. • - is preparing the paper of the “Effect of Acid Gases in Completion Brines on Corrosion Resistant Alloys” to NACE 2014. • JIP done the test on 13Cr 1Mo with several Brine and they are evaluating them.

  5. Thank you for your attention!

  6. Effect of Thiocyanate Findings show that brine-CRA combinations where SCN- additions can be used without risks of SCC are limited. The detrimental effect of SCN- is due to SCN- reaction products, including but not limited to H2S. Two SCN- decomposition reactions have been identified: (1) a low temperature route which appears to be confined to reactions associated with localized corrosion, and (2) thermal decomposition forming H2S at a higher temperatures.
