  1. Run 2001Muon Physics Opportunities Vince Cianciolo Muon Meeting BNL, 12/16/2000

  2. What Will RHIC Provide? • 4 weeks of cooldown (starting 4/1). • 3 weeks AuAu beam tests plus minimum 300 mb-1 AuAu full energy (12 weeks). • 3 weeks spin commisioning + 5 weeks running (goal to reach BB). • Remainder (16-22 weeks) undecided. • Bias is to do AuAu energy scan. • STAR (J. Thomas) is definitely interested in light-ion running. • RHIC (T. Roser) didn’t discount the possibility, but said that a proposal needed to be submitted because some ion-source study is needed.

  3. What Can We Hope To See? • J/:’: = 1200:20:1  The only HVM program for this year is the J/ . • I haven’t looked at the  because I’ve always been told that you can’t do it in the South Arm. • Single muons?

  4. Centrality Dependence

  5. Kinematic Dependence • Figure of xF, pT dependence from E866 PRL goes here.

  6. - J. Nagle

  7. sJ/ and Rates • sppJ/ = 3.3mb (color evap. scaled to 200 GeV/c). • sAAJ/ = sppJ/ *A1.84 (no anom. suppression, no charm enhancement) • 6% Muon B.R. • 4.3% integrated south arm acceptance. • Experiment up-time=75% • RHIC up-time=75% • Max  LVL1 rate = 6kHz • Max  triggers-to-tape rate (5 MB/sec) • Event sizes (kB): AuAu=200, CuCu=84, pp=30

  8. Rates and Trigger Requirements • AuAu, 100+100 GeV, 300 b-1 • #J/ = 33000 • LVL1 required = 1 • LVL1*LVL2 required = 58

  9. Rates and Trigger Requirements • pp, 100+100 GeV, 5 weeks, <L> = 50%BB • #J/ = 40000 • LVL1 required = 38 • LVL1*LVL2 required = 1345

  10. Rates and Trigger Requirements • AuAu, 65+65 GeV, 2 weeks, L=BB • #J/ = 8000 • LVL1 required = 1 • LVL1*LVL2 required = 38 • AuAu, 30+30 GeV, 2 weeks, L=BB • #J/ = 1750 • LVL1 required = 1 • LVL1*LVL2 required = 18

  11. Rates and Trigger Requirements • CuCu, 100+100 GeV, 2 weeks, <L>=50%BB • #J/ = 50000 • LVL1 required = 6 • LVL1*LVL2 required = 533 • OO, 100+100 GeV, 2 weeks, <L>=50%BB • #J/ = 36000 • LVL1 required = 24 • LVL1*LVL2 required = 1215

  12. Summary of Trigger Requirements • LL1 looks fine for next year, even gets us much of the way to LL1*LL2 requirements. • Even if LL1 performs as well as estimated, we will still need additional rejection at LL2, especially for a light-ion run.

  13. Conclusions • We will need both LL1 and LL2 triggers in order to take full advantage of the luminosity that RHIC will provide. • We will get decent samples (measured in the tens of thousands) of J/’s in the South Muon arm for AuAu, pp. • We will not get a notable sample of ’ or .

  14. Conclusions. Cont. • We would get quite small data sets from any kind of energy scan this year, but we would get sizeable data sets from even short (2 week) light-ion runs. • During RUN2002 we could gain data rate of nearly an order of magnitude (second muon arm + RHIC luminosity increase). With this improvement we could get a sizeable data sample in a length of time that would mesh well with the desires of STAR & PHOBOS.
