  1. Signs of the Kingdom: Luke 13:1-10 Freedom & Grace not Law Jesus’s inaugural Statement In Luke 4;18 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me,    because he has anointed me     to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners     and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’

  2. The Scene in the Synagogue • Jesus • The synagogue official • The crippled woman • The Audiance

  3. Jesus heals the crippled woman ‘Woman , you are set free from your infirmity.’ • The Synagogue leader was indignant; unbending in his observance of the law • He was caught up in the law rather than Love

  4. Freedom? • Through faith in Christ we are free to be the people God created us for • free from being enslaved to the burdens of following legalistic ritual . John 8.32 He whom the son sets free is free indeed. • Colossians 2:16-18 16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ

  5. Grace • Grace and freedom are intricately intertwined And they are wrapped up and driven by God’s enduring love for Humanity • Grace is God's unmerited favour towards us • Ephesians 2:8; "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the Gift of God." – Not by works, so that no one can boast.

  6. The Law God’s law was first given before Christ came. It was meant to help people understand God’s nature and how they should live. Jesus came to reveal God’s nature and His law of Love and forgiveness • Matt 22;37 : ‘“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”[c]38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself.”[d]40 All these two commandments hang all the law and the Prophets’

  7. Finding Freedom through the intoxicating joy of irresistible Grace • ‘Daddy I finally got to go to Disney land, not because I’m good, but because I’m yours’. • We are beneficiaries of this amazing Grace and freedom • ‘Freely freely we have received , so freely freely we must give.

  8. We have experienced True freedom • to be signs of the Kingdom of God . • The synagogue ruler couldn’t see beyond the law to Jesus’s love & compassion • avoided love’s obligation • Systems that have reduced people to statistics . People are lost man made systems.

  9. each time we Pray the Lord’s prayer, Thy Kingdom come, it is a commission to us , to go out and bring that Kingdom about. • In small incremental steps, people are being set free and entering into the Kingdom of God.
