Introduction of Taekwondo • A Korean martial art that can be differentiated through its high kicks, jumping and spinning kicks. • Taekwondo originally came into being by mixing elements of both popular martial arts karate and Han Chinese Kung-Fu with Korean martial arts such as Subak, Taekkyeon etc. • This development took place during the 1940’s and 1950’s. • In 1959, representatives from nine of the original martial arts schools in Korea took it upon themselves to form a Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA). • Since then, Taekwondo competitions are held and organised international by the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). https://sfanow.in
Taekwondo Competitions • On typical basis Taekwondo tournaments include sparring, breaking, patterns, demonstration teams and self-defence. • Sparring in competitions are in two types; (i) Point sparring & (ii) Olympic sparring • In point sparring strikes are given over light contact and the clock s only stopped when a point is scored. • Olympics sparring on the other hand is the opposite where strikes are given over full contact and the clock continues whilst you score points. • Scoring works on one point for a regular kick to the Hogu, a turning back kick is two points, three for back kick and a spinning kick on the head is four points. https://sfanow.in

Taekwondo Origins • The origins of this martial art come from the end of WWII at the beginning of 1945. • Seoul was home to some new martial arts schools called kwans, which were started by Korean martial artists who had studied in Japan due to its Korean occupation. • The term ‘traditional taekwondo’ came about as a result of the martial arts that these kwan practised during the 1940’s and 1950’s, but at the time the term wasn’t official used. • Subject to this, taekwondo was also adopted by the South Korean military and simultaneously increased in popularity around the country. • Coming from such humble origins, today taekwondo tournaments are held all around the world. https://sfanow.in
Traditional Taekwondo • As mentioned earlier, the term was coined based on the original kwans, however, each kwan practiced their own version of the art at the time. • Therefore, traditional taekwondo was the umbrella term under which it was held. • They themselves named the arts different names such as Tang Soo Do, Kong Soo Do and Tae Soo Do, but the reign ended when they collectively decided to call it taekwondo. • Today, traditional taekwondo is still studied by scholars, but under the respective terms of the time. • Since the end of the split names in 1959, taekwondo is officially known as that in all taekwondo competitions. https://sfanow.in
