  8. Welcome to Related Arts Art is very fun! However, it can be very messy. Please don’t wear your finest clothes. Mediais held once a week. We’re thrilled to have lots of new books to share this year. All students will have the opportunity to check out books. Musicis one hour a week. Come ready to move, sing, and play instruments. In P.E. always wear your tennis shoes. No jewelry please. Please send in a note if your student can not participate. Technologyoffers our students an opportunity to develop computer literacy skills that they will need to be successful in the future. Band and Orchestra is an opportunity for all students in grades 3-5 to learn how to play an instrument.

Reading This year we will be using the Common Core Curriculum which is a more cohesive and rigorous curriculum. • In 4th grade, your child will read widely and deeply from a range of high-quality, increasingly challenging fiction and nonfiction texts from diverse cultures and time periods. • Building knowledge about subjects through research projects and responding analytically to literary and informational sources will be key to your child’s continuing success.

  10. Guilford’s Schoolwide Reading Incentive Guildford’s This incentive will run from October to March. Students are to read at least 20 minutes every night. Students will receive a reading reward if they read at least 20 days of each month (October through March). At the end of the year, the students that have participated at least 5 months will be invited to our Guilford’sReaders are Leaders picnic. More information will be coming home in Friday folders in Sept.

  11. Language Arts • 4th graders will write stories or essays that are several paragraphs long. • By devoting significant time and effort to producing numerous written pieces over short and extended timeframes throughout the year, he or she also will gain control over many conventions of grammar, usage, and punctuation as well as learn ways to make himself or herself understood.

  12. What are the Common Core Standards? • The standards are the result of a national movement to provide an equitable, coherent, focused, and rigorous curriculum. • The standards will enable our students to be college and career ready in order to compete globally.

Common Core at a Glance ■ Summarizing the key details of stories, dramas, poems, and nonfiction materials, including their themes or main ideas. ■ Identifying and judging evidence that supports particular ideas in an author’s argument to change a reader’s point of view. ■ Integrating information from several print and digital sources to answer questions and solve problems. ■ Writing opinions that offer reasoned arguments and provide facts and examples that are logically grouped to support the writer’s point of view. ■ Writing stories, real or imaginary, that unfold naturally and developing the plot with dialogue, description, and effective pacing of the action.

  17. Math • Students will progress through similar math topics at varied instructional levels. • Topics include Measurement, Geometry, Algebraic Thinking and Numbers and Operations in Base Ten/Fractions. • For more information visit Howard County Public School website

  18. STEM In an effort to help students understand the spectrum of careers that exist they will learn the content and skills of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These behaviors include engagement in inquiry, logical reasoning, collaboration and investigation.

  19. Title 1 Compact Being that we are a Title I school, we will have an agreement describing the responsibilities of the teachers, students and parents in order to ensure the success of our students.  This compact or agreement will be sent home closer to conference time for you to review.  During parent/ teacher conferences the students will have the opportunity to set additional reading and math goals.

  20. Homework Policy • Expect to see homework Monday through Thursday. • Usually Word Study, Math, and 20 minutes of reading. • Parents should check the assignment book and signif homework was successfully completed. • Students are expected to spend between 40 and 60 minutes on homework each evening. If homework is taking longer than 60minutes please notify the teacher. • Send a note if there is a problem with any assignment.

  25. Reminders  Birthdays ~ Will be announced on WGES if the permission form is returned.  Fall Festival on October 31st ~ * Replaces Halloween activities, therefore it is more inclusive. * Students will not wear costumes.
