  3. Pulses Production & Consumption - India • Total Pulses Production in India: 14 – 14.5 million mt approx • Total Consumption in India: 18 million mt approx • Total Pulses Import: 3 – 3.5 million mt approx

Government Intervention • Govt. has directed 4 nodal agencies to import on its behalf. • They are: • The State Trading Corporation of India Ltd. • MMTC Ltd. • PEC Ltd. • NAFED • Currently Govt. of India has two schemes for import viz.: • a) Import and sell locally by tender to private players. This scheme is valid till 30th Sept 2010. • b) Import on behalf of various Indian States for distribution through the Public Distribution System (PDS). This system is valid till 31st March 2011.

  5. Challenges • The most widely used pulses in India are: • Black Matpe (Urad) Pigeon Peas (Toor) Green Beans (Moong) • Canada can consider cultivating these popular pulses while India • can guarantee a ready market for them. Only future can reveal the • success of such a collaboration!
