  1. Managing Conflict Scale, Orange, and Connotation Definition and Types Management Styles

  2. Scale • Please fill out your scale answering all the questions thinking about the same context of conflict. If thinking about conflict with significant other, answer all questions thinking about conflict with them. If thinking of conflict at work, answer all questions thinking about conflict at work.

  3. What do we do? • Two sisters fighting over an orange, we cannot get another orange, how do we settle it?

  4. Word Association • I say the word “Conflict”, you say…..

  5. Interpersonal Conflict • Defined- a situation in which the needs or ideas of one person are perceived to be at odds with or in opposition to the needs or ideas of another.

  6. Types • Pseudoconflict- not real…yet • Fact Conflict- disputed information • Value Conflict-good or bad, right or wrong • Policy Conflict- appropriate plan or action • Ego Conflict- Must “win” or look good

  7. Management Styles • Withdrawal- resolving conflict by physically or mentally removing oneself from the conflict. • Is it assertive? • Is it Cooperative? • Lose-Lose

  8. Management Styles • Accommodating- resolving conflict by satisfying others’ needs or accepting others’ ideas while neglecting our own. • Assertive? • Cooperative? • Lose-Win

  9. Management Styles • Forcing- resolving conflict by attempting to satisfy your own needs or advance your own ideas with no concern for the needs or ideas of others and no concern for the harm done to the relationship. • Assertive? • Cooperative • Win-Lose

  10. Management Styles • Compromising- people attempt to resolve their conflict by providing at least some satisfaction for both parties. • Assertive? • Cooperative? • Lose-Lose 85% of time • Win-Win 15% of time

  11. Management Styles • Collaborating- resolving conflict by trying to fully address the needs and issues of each party and arrive at a solution that is mutually satisfying. • Assertive? • Cooperative? • Win-Win
