  1. Observing System Monitoring Center Background:The OSMC is a tool to assist managers and scientists with monitoring the global in-situ ocean observing system, identifying problems in real-time, and evaluating the adequacy of the observations. The heart of the OSMC is a database of the times, locations, platform information, and parameters measured. Kevin O’Brien – NOAA/PMEL/UW Candyce Clark, NOAA/COD Ted Habermann, NOAA/NGDC Steve Hankin, NOAA/PMEL Kevin Kern, NOAA/NDBC Michelle Little, NOAA/NDBC/PSI Dave Neufeld, NOAA/NGDC many other vital contributors …

  2. OSMC as an observing system integration tool • Three areas of integration under OSMC • Real time input from GTS • Climate platform archives (‘DACs’) • Climate products and data

  3. Real time integration All Obs for previous two days

  4. Real time integration (cont) Drilling down

  5. Real time integration (cont)

  6. Integration with climate archives

  7. Relational data base OPeNDAPserver w/THREDDScatalog available thru a standard web service Integration with climate archives (cont) ANTARES OS_ANTARES-1_200509_D_CTD.nc OS_ANTARES-1_200609_D_CTD.nc OS_ANTARES-1_200709_D_CTD.nc incoming data CIS OS_CIS-1_200308_D_CTD.nc OS_CIS-1_200405_D_CTD.nc OS-CIS-1_200509_D_CTD.nc DYFAMED E1M3A . . . . . . . all in standard format: netCDF+CF

  8. Integration with climate archives (cont)

  9. Integration with climate products and data • Many climate products are already available via OPeNDAP • (though not all are kept up to date) • OSMC can: • offer tools to compare and evaluate products • encourage use of webservices like OPeNDAPand format standardslike netCDF-CF andGRIB Reynolds bias error with ocean obs

  10. Integration with climate products and data Example: Performance Monitoring GOOS Requirement for SST is 25 observations / week @ 500 km

  11. OSMC and Ocean Observations Panel for Climate (OOPC) reporting

  12. We know what you did last year, pinniped #9900317, aka “Floppy”
