  2. What is CLUB UMD? • YOUTH LEADERSHIP AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM sponsored by the University of Maryland President’s Outreach Council in partnership with local schools: • George Washington Elementary School for 3rd through 5th grade children on Tuesdays from 3-5 pm • Southwest Baltimore Charter School for 6th through and 8th grade children on Wednesdays from 3:30-5 pm • CLUB UMD Schedule for 2011 – 2012 school year (specific dates follow): • Fall Semester: Early October through early December 2011; and • Spring Semester: February through April 2012 • The children who enroll in CLUB UMD are expected to serve as student leaders & community ambassadors. CLUB UMD’s weekly meetings at each school is supported by UM volunteer mentors and coordinators. • UM volunteer mentors help the children with homework and support activities relating to science, fitness and college and careers. Volunteer mentors are guided in activities by coordinators and presenters who provide lesson plans and help lead activities. • Volunteers are needed to support family engagement activities or special request activities of a one-time nature to each school. These activities are led by Council members.

  4. Background Checks • A background check, including fingerprinting, is required for volunteers by Baltimore City Public School System (BCPSS). • Important Requirements for CLUB UMD volunteers: • Get the required background check at the SMC Campus Center, Room # 309 scheduled from 1 – 3 pm on Tuesday, October 18th or Wednesday, October 19th. It will only take about 15 minutes. • Bring your drivers’ license to the background check! • Let us know which date you select for the background check. • If you’re not able to attend on 10/18 or 10/19, you need to report to BCPSS Headquarters, 200 E North Ave (Room # 317) for the background check. • If you participated as a mentor and had a background check by BCPSS you do not need to repeat the background check.

  5. How will I know what to do as a CLUB UMD volunteer? • Guidance for Volunteers: Club UMD coordinators will guide volunteer mentors on-site at the participating school and during campus trips. No other training is needed. • Mentoring Activities: Volunteers help children with homework, support science, fitness, and college and career awareness activities. Most activities are interactive and fun. The children look forward to meeting with their mentors each week, so mentors are expected and needed to attend as many weekly sessions as possible. • Mentors are needed to actively participate in these activities with the children, helping to keep them on task and prompting them to ask thoughtful questions that will deepen their understanding of the given activity.
