The state reported a large spike in Covid cases on Tuesday, with 18,466 new infections, up 51% from the day before (12,160). The state also reported 653 patients infected with Omicron. The city of Mumbai has the most (408), followed by Pune (71). The Maharashtra government has decided to close institutions and universities until February 15 and transition to online classes. The decision was made in response to an upsurge in Covid-19 cases. The statement was made on Wednesday by Uday Samant, the state’s minister of higher and technical education. OFFICIAL’S STATEMENT- “We put a priority on the safety of our kids, teachers, and non-teaching personnel. We have decided to halt physical classes in colleges and universities until February 15 in accordance with the chief minister’s orders. Exams planned around this time will also be conducted online. A decision on the examination to be held after February 15 will be made in the following days,” Samant stated at the time of the announcement. He attended a review meeting of the Covid situation on Tuesday with district collectors and divisional commissioners, as well as vice-chancellors of institutions, to gain a better understanding of the situation on the ground. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation, on the other hand, announced on Monday that all schools in the city will be closed till January 31. Primary and secondary schools in Pune will be closed until January 30. Maharashtra’s School Education Minister, Varsha Gaikwad, stated in December that if the situation arose, the administration would close all of the state’s schools. Guidelines- ● The decision, according to the order, applies to all non-agricultural institutions and colleges in the state, as well as private universities and colleges. ● All hostels would be closed as well, although foreign students would be allowed to stay in the hostel and get all necessary care. ● All tests scheduled during this time will be performed online, and if a student is unable to complete the exam online, the college will provide enough assistance to ensure that the year is not disrupted. ● It has been recommended that all colleges establish a student helpline to assist students during this time. ● At the university, only 50% of teaching and non-teaching employees are permitted. ● The decree also advises all higher educational institutions to ensure that all students and faculty members get vaccinated.
