  6. Why this project ? • The main part of the Norwegian produce of fruits, vegetable and potatoes are stored. Postharvest losses at the farm level are often 10-30% + additional losses during distribution of 10 % • Storage of these commodities are complex and need knowledge about plant physiology, plant pathology, agronomy etc.. In addition technical competence is also needed • The fruit/vegetable/potato industry ask for national competense to consult in these areas • During the last years the competence in postharvest management has been reduced • If the gained competence in the project could reduce the post harvest loss by 20 %, it sums up to 200 mill NOK each year!

  7. The main objective • Increase knowledge of long- and short-term storage management of Norwegian grown fruits, potatoes and vegetables Educating 3 PhD – students is the core activity in this ”KMB”-project

  8. Subgoals 1. Develop methods for the prediction of storage performance based on pre-harvest factors (physiological status, disease pressure, chemical markers etc.)  a) Improve prediction of long-term potato storability under different conditions based on maturity indicators and disease infection pressure - WP1a  b) Establish a decision support system for estimating apple storability based on climatic conditions in the growing season, nutritional status and maturity at harvest - WP1b c) Document effects of cultivar and pre-harvest factors (maturity and disease pressure) in carrot production on long- and short-term storability and processing properties – WP1c

  9. Subgoals(cont.) 2. Establish a knowledge base for the determination of which vegetables are most suited for different end uses in terms of sensory quality and content of compounds beneficial for health – WP2

Project organization and management • Projectgroup: All scientists (including international partners), Phd students and technicians working in the project • Reference group: Wholesale dealers of fruits vegetables and potatoes and other companies supporting the project and Norwegian Agricultural Extentsion Service
