  1. Welcome To First Grade Open House Barrington Place Elementary Fort Bend ISD

  2. Daily Routine Arrival • Students may enter the building at 7:30 a.m. and go directly to first grade hall. • Class begins promptly at 8:10 a.m. • Your child will be marked “tardy” at 8:10 a.m. if they are not in the classroom.

  3. Tardies & Absences • Students should arrive by 8:00. Your child will be marked tardy at 8:10 a.m., if he/she is not in his/her seat. Attendance is taken at 10:00 am. Your child will be marked absent at that time. • The back door entrance will be locked at 8:10 am. If you arrive after that, you must enter through the front doors. If you come in the back doors, please come to the front, show your ID and receive a badge.

  4. Medical appointments • Medical appointments -- Your child MUST bring a doctor’s excuse to school back in order for it to be an excused absence. Notes from home will not be accepted for doctor visits. • If your child stays home from school, you must bring a note within 2 days for it to be an excused absence.

  5. Daily Routines Dismissal • Dismissal is at 3:10 p.m. • Please be on time. • Late parents are required to park, come inside, and sign their child out. • A note with a signature IS required to change your child’s transportation. No phone call or email messages will be accepted.

  6. Daily Routines Lunch • Recess is at 10:30 A.M. • Lunch is at 11:00 A.M. • Prices: Hot lunch – $2.25 • Parents are encouraged to pre-pay. Your child will be given an account number and the money will be deducted when lunch is purchased. Please help your child memorize his/her number.

  7. Lunch • The cafeteria will let you know when your child owes money. • If you visit your child during lunch, please sit at the designated parent table.

  8. Miscellaneous Birthdays You may send your child with birthday treats. They will be shared at the end of the day. Volunteer In order to chaperone for school field trips and/or volunteer in our classroom, you must complete a background check. Please fill out the form on the Fort Bend ISD website.

  9. Reading • Your child will be reading a different story each week. Many reading activities will be completed in class. • Guided reading lessons will also occur in the classroom. • Please read with your child at home each night to ensure their success in reading.

  10. Reading WORD WALL • Five words will be sent home each week in your child’s daily folder. Your child will need to learn how to read these words and write them. • Word wall words are commonly known as “high frequency” words. • Put word wall words on flash cards and practice every night at home.

  11. Language Spelling • Word lists will go home at the beginning of the week. • Tests will be on Fridays. Phonics/Writing • Phonics and oral language activities along with basic language skills will be presented. • Writing will also be emphasized.

  12. Daily Routines Math 1+2=3 • Math is FUN! We want students to feel this way. Our math routine will include whole group lessons, guided math groups, and workstations. Our concepts will move from concrete to abstract. • Math manipulatives will be used for hands-on instruction in the classroom. • Concepts: Addition & Subtraction to 18 Patterns, Graphs, Place value, Skip Counting, Money, Fractions, etc.

  13. Daily Routines Science & Social Studies • Theme units will be the focus. Science: Scientific Process, Physical Properties of Objects, Light, Heat, Sound, Changes Caused by Heating and Cooling, etc. • Social Studies: At School, Friends, Family, and Me, Everyone Works, All Around the World, Historical Figures, etc.

  14. Outclass • Outclass Time: 1:15-2:05 • Students will rotate through Art, Music, P.E., and Library. • On P.E. days, please have your child wear tennis shoes. Ms. Kim’s Outclass Schedule Monday: Science Tuesday: Art Wednesday: Music Thursday: P.E. Friday: Library

  15. Library • Students will go the library once a week. They will check out one book and return it the following week. • Please make sure you read your child’s library book with them. • If your child has not memorized his/her lunch/library number, please help him/her do that at home.

  16. Snack • Students may bring one HEALTHY snack to class. • Snack time is after outclass around 2:05.

  17. Daily Folder • Daily Folders will go home everyday. • Spelling lists, homework and important information will be listed. • Behavior for the day will also be listed. • Sign or initial daily! • Feel free to correspond with your child’s teacher in this folder.

  18. Tuesday Folders • Conduct recorded in the agenda will be reflected in the Tuesday folder. • Anytime an “N” is given, a note of explanation will be included. • Papers and important notes will also come home in this folder. • Please sign and return onWednesday! • Keep any papers sent home unless otherwise indicated.

  19. Homework • Students have been receiving a homework journal. Please make sure your child is completing 3 activities on the homework calendar and that you sign or initial each box. Students need to turn in their homework on Thursday. I will return their homework journal the following Monday.

  20. Backpacks • Please make sure that your child brings a backpack to school each day. The backpack needs to be large enough to hold the agenda and Tuesday folder. • We strongly recommend that students do not use rolling backpacks at school. • Please check the backpack each day for work, notes, etc. Please empty on a daily basis.

  21. Book Orders • Teachers will send home order forms from different book clubs. These are great reading resources for your child. They can also be great gifts. • Send the book order and check (made out to Scholastic) to the teacher. She will take care of everything for you. • Do not send cash! • Parent Online Activation Code: H4HPZ

  22. Conferences • Our conference time is 1:15-2:05 P.M. and 3:15 - 3:45 p.m. everyday. • Call for an appointment or write a note in your child’s agenda to schedule conferences. • District conference days will be Oct. 3rd and Feb.12th. (This is also early dismissal for your child – 10:55am). • Please SIGN up for a Fall conference TODAY!

  25. Classroom Rules • Follow direction the first time they are given. • Keep hands and feet to yourself. • Listen to the speaker. • Respect others’ properties.

  26. First Grade Discipline • First grade has a color chart. Each child begins on green. They move their clip down a color for inappropriate behavior. They can also move their clip up for going above and beyond expectations. • Their daily behavior color will be listed in your child’s agenda. • Please sign/initial the daily folder each day.

  27. Consequences & Rewards • PURPLE – SUPERHERO (Going above and beyond expectations) • GREEN – Ready to Learn (Everyone starts here everyday.) • YELLOW – Make better choices. Yellow is a reminder. Please speak to your child. • ORANGE – Think About It! Continuing to make poor choices. Please speak to your child. There will be a written note in your child’s daily folder. • RED-Parent Contact. Your child had a rough day and needs the involvement of the parent and/or principal.

  28. Report Cards • Report cards will be sent home every 9 weeks. • Grades will be given during the first nine weeks. • Please sign and return report card envelopes the following day.

  29. Promotion Requirements • Students must meet the following requirements in order to be promoted to second grade: • DRA Level 16-18 • Has majority of “Meets standard expectations consistently” in all subject areas • Attendance requirements (90%) -No more than 17 days absent

  30. Things to Note: • Progress Reports go home September 24, 2013 • Please consider joining PTA! • Fundraisers due September 27, 2013
