  1. ITU Workshop on “Tackling climate change and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Measurement” (Cotonou, Benin, 19 July 2012) Standards for the protection of radio installations Ahmed ZEDDAM, ITU-T SG5 Chair France Telecom Orange

  2. Outline • Overview of ITU-T/SG5 Publications • Classification of SG5 publications • Series K Recommendations • Handbooks • Lightning Handbook • Earthing and Bonding Handbook • Standards for the protection of radio installations

  3. Cotonou, Benin, 19 July 2012 ITU-T/SG5: Reference document • “Guide to the use of ITU-T Publications produced by Study Group 5 aimed at achieving Electromagnetic Compatibility and Safety” • (Supplement to the K-series Recommendations) • Guide • List of the Titles of K-series Recommendations • Terminology

  4. Cotonou, Benin, 19 July 2012 Relationships between the ITU-T documents ITU-R ITU-T ITU-D SG 5 Recommendations Other publications Handbooks Directives

  5. Cotonou, Benin, 19 July 2012 Classification of SG 5 Publications Considered equipment and installations • Equipment and installations located in telecommunications centres, at radio installations or at outdoor locations • Telecommunication lines at outdoor locations • Equipment located in Customer Premises • Handbooks & Guides: • Lightning Handbook • Earthing & Bonding Handbook • Measuring Handbook • Mitigation Handbook • Directives • Resistibility Guide

  6. Cotonou, Benin, 19 July 2012 Classification of SG 5 Publications Series K Recommendations: “Protection against interference” • List: from K.1 (11/1988) to K.94 (05/2012) • Some of them deleted after its content became technically out of date • Access: • K.6 to K. 26 in Blue Book (1989) • Individual issues: paper or electronic CD versions • Free access to List of Recommendations:http://www.itu.int/publibase/itu-t/ItutAllBySeries.asp?serie=K

  7. Cotonou, Benin, 19 July 2012 Lightning Handbook: “The protection of telecommunication lines and equipment against lightning discharges” Composed of three volumes • The Chapters 6 to 8 • protective practices for specific parts of telecommunication networks(overhead lines, underground cables, switching and subscriber equipment, radio installations); • protective practice for personnel; • estimation of frequency of breakdowns for various types of installations (telecommunication towers, buried cables, overhead lines).

  8. Cotonou, Benin, 19 July 2012 Earthing and Bonding Handbook Earthing and Bonding of Telecommunication Installation • Main purpose of earthing in telecom installation; • Requirements for service and protection earthing; • Earthing / bonding configurations,(star, mesh. mixed star-mesh); • Characteristics / configurations of earth electrodes(trench, earth spikes, plates) • Measuring the soil resistivity and earth electrode resistance; • Maintenance of earthing installations.

  9. Recommendation ITU-T K.56 : Protection of radio base stations against lightning discharges • Presents the techniques applied to a telecom. radio base stationin order to protect it against lightning discharges • The need of protection is obtained from the methodology contained in IEC 62305-2, which is used to determine the relevant lightning protection level (LPL) for the installation • The protection techniques for the external area cover the lightning protection system (LPS), bondingprocedures, earthingand the installation of surge protective devices (SPDs) at the power meter station • The protection techniques for the equipment building cover the feeder and lighting cables, the electric power conductors, the telecommunication cabling and the earthing/bonding procedures applied to cable trays and equipment frames

  10. Other useful Standards Recommendation ITU-T K.27 “Bonding configurations and earthing inside a telecommunication building” Recommendation ITU-T K.35 “Bonding configurations and earthing at remote electronic sites” IEC 62305-1 “Protection against lightning – Part 1: General principles. IEC 62305-2 “Protection against lightning – Part 2: Risk management” IEC 62305-3 “Protection against lightning – Part 3: Physical damage to structures and life hazard” IEC 62305-4 “Protection against lightning – Part 4: Electrical and electronic systems within structures”
