  3. Northeast Kansas Library System • 120 member libraries; 48 public libraries • Universal access to library service • Continuous improvement of library service, especially in small and rural libraries. • $2.5 million budget

  4. Vision and Values • Convenient access to state of art library resources and outstanding customer service. • We are leaders and innovators in providing exemplary library services. • Embrace innovation and change. • We strive for technology 50 feet from the bleeding edge. • Seek opportunities for statewide access to cooperative technology services.

  5. Free and Open Source Software • Source code can be downloaded, used and modified without fee. • Free like a free kitten, not like free beer. • Development controlled by its community of users and code contributors. • Examples: Firefox, Linux, Java, Apache, Wordpress, Drupal, Evergreen, Koha.

  6. KanguardOpen Source Internet filtering • Internet filtering controversy. • Requested by member libraries. • Open source solution controlled by libraries. • Expansion to statewide service requested and funded by State Library. • Inefficient Internet response time issues. • Eliminated in favor of low cost commercial service.

  7. My Kansas Library on the WebLibrary web site service • Developed in response to request by State Library. • Totally aligned with vision. • Relatively low risk, high reward. • Centrally managed public library website service. • Content determined by local libraries. • Open source Wordpress based service.

  8. Nexpress integrated library system • A shared regional integrated library automation system that allows library users to directly place requests for materials in the collection of any NExpress library. • Perfectly aligned with vision, but a departure from existing service approach. • High risk, high cost, high reward. • Single shared catalog for NEKLS libraries.
