Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH)

  • peptide hormone and neurotransmitter involved in the stress response
  • stimulates the synthesis and the secretion of ACTH in the corticotropin-producing cells (corticotrophs) of the anterior pituitary gland
slide5

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)

  • polypeptide tropic hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland (corticotropic cell)
  • component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is often produced in response to biological stress
  • stimulates secretion of glucocorticoid steroid hormones from adrenal cortex
cortisol
Cortisol
  • steroid hormone, produced by the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex.
  • released in response to stress and a low level of blood glucocorticoids.
  • The release of cortisol is controlled by CRH and ACTH
