  1. One possible way to encode information in text is print it in two slightly different typefaces. The secret message is decoded by ignoring one of the typefaces.   2. There are however, methods to encode messages into the symbol values of the text itself, thus guaranteeing the propagation of the message to any (faithful) copy.   4. A more sophisticated variation on the same basic idea is to embed the message by a technique of Equidistant Letter Sequences (ELS). The idea is to imagine the text as a continuous string of characters, with all punctuation and spaces removed. To decode a message of length K, start at the Nth place and read off every Dth letter. As an example we have encode the name James in (4) below using an N value (often called the Offset) of 7 and a D value (often called the Skip) of 4. Why not just ask?   7. Homework! Spend one or two hours studying the “Bible Codes”. Warning, there is a high variance in the quality of research and writing on the subject, not to mention bias problems.
