  2. Objectives The objectives of this unit are…. 1. Language Focus: Facilities Management and Planning 2. Vocabulary Focus: Events Facilities and Management The purpose of this unit is to develop competence with using events terminology, principles and planning activities.

  3. Objectives By the end of this unit you will be able to: • Describe the MICE industry and it’s relation to the hotel business • Describe conferences and AV equipment requirements • Plan appropriate seating arrangements • Talk about accommodation contents and facilities • Describe size and dimensions • Listen to and distinguish changes to programmes of events • Understand written and schematic plan seminar requirements

  4. Conferences What exactly is a conference?  A conference is an assembly of individuals or groups to meet and discuss changes or ideas important to their field of study or business. But what is the purpose of a conference?  The purpose of a conference is the presenting of new information about a specific topic, and then giving the audience an opportunity to reflect on the information and present new questions for discussion.

How will you invite your participants; email, letter, phone call, etc., or will you be promoting the conference to the general public? 12. And most importantly, who will organize and host the event?

  18. Listening – Annual Conference • Look at the programme for the Hoteliers’ Annual Conference to be held at a hotel in Edinburgh. (page 117) • Listen to a conference coordinator discussing the programme with her assistant. Make a note of the things which have been changed from the original programme. • Listen again and make a list of all the things which still have to be checked and arranged.
