Introduction • 5 out of 7 people believe the problem is not guns • The new gun laws will be ineffective in reducing murders due to guns • Avid shooter since age of 10
The New Laws • Focus on knowing who has what • Register large capacity magazines • No longer buy them
The New Laws • Register assault rifles • Defined as “Semi-automatic center-fire rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least one of the following: folding or telescoping stock, any grip of the weapon… forward pistol grip, flash suppressor, grenade launcher, flare launcher, fixed magazine that accepts more than ten rounds, overall length of less than 30 inches”
The New Laws • Register assault rifles • Defined as “Semi-automatic center-fire rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least one of the following: folding or telescoping stock, any grip of the weapon… forward pistol grip, flash suppressor, grenade launcher, flare launcher, fixed magazine that accepts more than ten rounds, overall length of less than 30 inches” • Bring to police barracks or sell to a gun shop • National background check before any sale
Why They Will Not Work • Look into past to see future • Chicago has most stringent gun laws • In 2012, over 500 gun related murders • Most extreme gun control has not helped
What They Did Right • Since 1994, over 2 million rejected sales through background checks • Background checks could help the problem • Required for all gun sales in Connecticut
What Can We Do? • Know who you are voting for • Write a letter or create a movement • Research before voting for something
Conclusion • The new gun laws will be ineffective in reducing murders due to guns • If the past is any indication we need to change our ways • Not last time you will hear about this
