  5. Invictus “Invictus” is a poem by William Ernest Henley, inspired by events in his lifetime. Henley had tuberculosis, a common disease in the 1800s. To save his life, doctors decided that his leg must be amputated. When doctors said that his other leg must be amputated, Henley refused and found another doctor who said he would do everything he could to help him keep his remaining leg. This meant extensive surgery on his foot to help stop the tuberculosis.

  6. Invictus While recovering from the extensive foot surgery, which was an extremely painful procedure that required much recovery time, the idea of “Invictus” came to Henley. This near death experience, along with an impoverished childhood, contributed to the meaning of the poem. Invictus means unconquerable in Latin.
